Default Quick exhaust question...

I'm installing a new exhaust system on my 2014 street glide, do I need to remove the old wire mesh looking or whatever it is original from the factory exhaust port gasket? And does the copper looking crush ring style replace that then?

I know prob a stupid question but new at doing this on streetbikes, used to dirt bikes.

Thank you for any help!!!

Some wil say yes. I wouldn't. But if you do, use the same style gasket. Just my experience.
And there's no such thing as a "quick" exhaust question.

So what about the new cooper crush style exhaust gasket, don't even use it then?

I wouldn't. I hear of too many leak issues with them.

What does the new exhaust manufacturer recommend? The way the exhaust is made to fit in the head may dictate which will work best. The manufacturer should know.

Most people don't have issues with the OEM crush gaskets, but some believe that as they crush they intrude into the exhaust flow and affect performance..... not sure I believe it affects much myself.

Many who use the flat-style Screamin' Eagle gaskets will double them up.

I've used both. I installed the exhaust per manufacturers instructions and torque the bolts per the service manual routine..... I've never had a problem/leak.

In any case, I never re-use an exhaust gasket....

Put the copper colored gaskets in a catch-all drawer and get a set of Screaming Eagle gaskets. They're only about $10-12 or so.

I had the Longshots that were on my bike off several times with the basic crush gaskets- no leaks. I changed to Big Shots Long without changing gaskets- no leaks.
I used the basic crushers when I installed new heads- no leaks. I've had the exhaust off a couple times since without changing the gaskets- no leaks.
Just my experience.

I used Novello copper gaskets in my 01fxd. The bike is still on the road 13 years later and probably closecto 60,000 miles. The standard gaskets blocked flow in my mildly ported heads and i just didn't get a good seal with SE gaskets.
