Default Primary fluid

I went over to my Indy the other day and got some Amsoil 20-50 and some Amsoil severe gear 75-90 for the tranny -

He said that I was good to go with 32 oz in the Primary. I thought that the primary took 38 oz., he said it was fine with 32oz.

Any thoughts?

You did check your owners manual, right? It says 38.

Personally, thats what I would go with, but thats just me.

It depends. For example the Rushmores take 34 ounces for a regular fluid change and 38 if the primary cover is removed. Considering the compensator problems Harley has experienced, I put in 34 ounces. Another way to measure it is the fluid should just touch the bottom of the clutch.

The owners manuals for both my 2009 Ultra Classic and my dad's 2014 Ultra Limited say 38oz in the primary for a regular fluid change and 45 oz if you take the outer primary off.

My dad has a 2014 rushmore ultra limited and his owners manual says 38 oz for a regular fluid change and 45 oz if the primary is dry from taking the outer primary off.

There warnings about low primary levels in most HD service manuals and how that may affect shifting or finding neutral. My 2013 Road Glide Ultra calls for 38 ozs. when doing a normal fluid change and that's what I do.

I should have been more specific. 2016 Touring page 1-25 of the service manual wet 34 oz; dry 38 oz. The 2016's have the narrow primary cover. 2014 Touring page 1-27 of the service manual 38 oz wet, 45 oz dry.

that's what I run and I have to check the chain tension each time. I'd hazard a guess that so does most every one that gets there bike serviced by an independent shop.

Why did they change the primary cover in 2016?
