My 2009 Streetglide at 25k started fine in the morning when cold but when warm and quick stops it would crank over and sound awful and bang and clank and not start. Replaced starter clutch and resolved my issue. Caused by weak compensator. Have new comp but have yet to install it but bike runs fine and no further issues and now have 38k on the bike. Like previously said with new battery check grounds and such first. But if it's acting like mine would guess the starter cluch within that starter is bad. You can either replace the starter but more expensive or you can order a new Harley or All ***** starter cluch and repair it by yourself. I did a write up on the forum when I replaced mine. Good luck!

My 08 ultra was doing the same thing on a recent trip to Caribou Maine. Brought it to dealer and under warranty found out that my starter was on its way out. Also they found a handful of leaks from primary, shift shaft gasket, inner bearing gasket.....on my way to pick up bike shortly.....hopefully no more hard starts when hot......I will update everyone later.

Thank you. I'm hearing that it's more common when the bike is hot, but mine has no rhyme or reason. I have a tough time when its cold (first start of the day) and occasionally when hot. It makes a godawful sound. I noticed some smoke coming out around the air filter this morning. Sometimes I get a funky smell.

Reason: adding more info
So picked up the bike last Saturday and the culprit was a bad starter. So under my extended warranty that was replaced. After they detailed the bike they found a leak coming from primary...turns out there was more leaks coming from oil pan, shift shaft seal inner and outer primary gaskets.....all under warranty.....all I am going to say is that my bike is running real good....starts perfect.....apparently I have had an issue with the starter for while and never knew it was the starter that was the problem.

Thank you Leachman, I'm leaning towards thinking its the starter too. Sometimes it catches perfectly. Other times it doesn't. Hot or cold.
Hey guys, I know I'm a little late replying. I had 25K mile service done on my bike which included a new fuel filter. I'm still having occasional hard starts, but it doesn't sound as sickening as before. My buddy who is a mechanic said it sounds more like a fuel management problem than a starter. I can deal with that. When I get a few bucks together I might get a new fuel manager installed. Thanks again for all the help and replies.
Through experience with my 2005 EFI and 2013 EFI that when the engine is hot, been run to operating temperature, it takes a few more revolutions on the engine before it will start. When these engines are overnight cold they fire right up. I am curious though about the fuel filter replacement. The scheduled maint. interval chart shows it being changed at 25K? My 2013 shows it to be changed at 100K.
