I was recently on a long trip on my 2008 Ultra Classic. While in 6th gear, I would accelerate to pass a vehicle and my RPM's would rapidly go up several thousand and the bike would appear to drop down to 5th gear all by itself. The 6th gear light would disappear for a moment but would eventually come back on and my RPM's would normalize. Would only happen if I rolled the throttle hard. Later in the day it started to do it in all gears. Any ideas? Thanks
This is your problem.
You can try adjusting it and you may get a few more miles. But, really, it will only get worse.
I put in an Energy One +1 Kevlar set with a heavy duty spring. It's been a very good choice for me.

Do the clutch pack adjustment on a cold engine, while you're in there primary fluid change and don't forget the clutch handle final adjust. Then if that doesn't do anything for you, I would also say new clutch plates.

Your bike is not dropping down to 5th gear all by itself.
The RPM's going up several thousand while rolling on the throttle in 6th gear like that, tells you that your clutch is slipping.
Keep at it and you will eventually burn your clutch out completely.
And the Green 6th gear light going out would be normal under those conditions.
That light is not really a gear indicator connected to the transmission.
It is controlled by a math algorithm calculating the rpm/speed combination, to tell you when your in 6th gear.
Anytime you raise the RPM up enough (or simply pull in the clutch lever just a little), that light will go out.
