may usemobil1 15w-50, now that i think about it, it is what came in my wife's new Toyota, and that's what they use when they do oil changes on it.

Modern day 20/50 Quality oils SYN or not are fine for most any conditions you will ride in.

Takes longer to get 50W nd 60W oil to flow smoother after startup.
Less oil protectiuon when you could really use it.

Want 50W, that's the advantage of muli-weight oil.
Lower numbers flow earlier, giving your engine protection and will eventually get to your 50W when hot.
Great stuff, 20W50 oil.

A lot of misunderstanding of oil in this thread.
W= Winter (not weight).
20w-50 has a cold start rating of 20 and hot rating of 50 (viscosity at 212 degrees f). Straight 50 non winter grade oil has a hot rating of 50 (viscosity at 212 degrees f). Therefore, difference of 20w-50 and straight 50 is in the cold properties of the oil - once hot no difference. Or something like that.

FWIW, the Moco still sells a straight 60 weight oil, but its not synthetic. When I had my 107" kit done at Hyperformance, Randy Torgeson recommended I use that. It made the bike noticeably quieter, but I always allowed more time for warmups.

I've been using it for years in the engine only and it works great for me. Get it at Walmart in 5qt jugs for around $25. Beats $10 qt for the V-twin 20W-50.

My indy is old school and wants me to use regular oil or at least mix one quart of regular oil into the synthetic but I've been using the Mobil 1 15W-50 forever in my Road King. I had my indy rebuild it at 113,000 miles ( it was still running, just wanted to upgrade it and didn't want to push it further ) and he told me it was the first time he had ever reused a cam plate. He couldn't find anything wrong with it and it was still well within spec. I'd like to think it was the oil that made it reusable. After 6,000 miles on his oil, I just changed it back to Mobil 1 15W-50. Now that the crank is trued and welded with the bearing upgrade, I'm expecting well over 100,000 miles on this build and then at that point, only having to do the top end.

There are a ton of oil threads here. In my opinion oil is like beer. We all have our favorite but in the end, they will all get you drunk. Any good oil will work just fine in your bikes engine but I wouldn't advise regular motor oil in the primary or transmission. Engine oil in the engine, clutch friendly lube in the primary, and transmission lube in the transmission. Each has as different purpose and therefore I don't like using and all inclusive lube in all three holes. Because of the clutch, you lose friction modifiers the engine likes and the transmission doesn't get the lube it likes either.

================================================== =====

LOL!!

I JUST HAVE TO ASK & NO DISRESPECT INTENDED EITHER.

AND THIS IS RELATED TO THIS THREAD BECAUSE IT HAS TO DO WITH OIL AND WHAT WAS POSTED HERE ABOUT SOMEONE TRYING TO IMPROVE THEIR MOTORS HOT OIL PRESSURE BY INSTALLING HEAVIER 20-60 GRADE OIL WHICH IS A BANDAID FIX @ BEST.

I AM JUST WONDERING WHY GUYS THAT HAVE AN HD SHOWING LOWER OIL PRESSURE (OR OTHER NEGATIVE HEAT RELATED ENGINE PERF ISSUES OR RIDER COMFORT COMPLAINTS) IN SUMMER HEAT THAT BOTHERING THEM ENOUGH TO TRY HEAVIER OIL TO IMPROVE OIL PRESSURE IN SUMMER HEAT DON'T SIMPLY ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSE WHICH IS THE "EXCESSIVE HEAT " THEIR AIR COOLED HD'S PRODUCE IN SUMMER HEAT THAT WILL RESULT IN MANY (5-6) GREAT BENEFITS RIGHT OFF THE BAT?

IF /WHEN YOU DO THAT THE LOWER OIL PRESSURE IN SUMMER HEAT WILL BE IMPROVED RIGHT OFF THE BAT BY 10-12PSI+ @ IDLE & @ CRUISE TOO WHILE STAYING WITH 20W-50 OIL & NOT HAVING TO GO WITH HEAVIER 20-60 ALL BECAUSE THE OIL & MOTOR AREN'T OVER HEATED ANYMORE.

AND THATS GOOD FOR THE MOTOR IN MULT WAYS & NOT JUST HELPFULL IN IMPROVING / INCREASING OIL PRESSURE IN SUMMER HEAT LIKE HEAVIER OIL HELPS A BIT & THATS TIT.

AND THATS NOT TO MENTION THE MANY GUYS I HAVE SEEN POSTING HERE IN HDFORUMS OVER THE PAST FEW YRS THAT HAVE INSTALLED HI FLOW OR HI VOL PERF OIL PUMPS WITH HIGHER OIL PRESSURE BYPASS SPRING SPEC TRYING TO IMPROVE HOT OIL PRESSURE ALONG WITH SOME THEM ALSO INSTALLING NEW PERF LIFTERS & ADJ PUSH RODS TOO ALL IN AN ATTEMPT TO IMPROVE HOT OIL PRESSURE & REDUCE VALVE/LIFTER NOISE IN SUMMER HEAT WHEN ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS COOL THE OIL 50DEG F USING THE SAME 2 COOLING MODS I REC FOR LESS BUCKS AND LESS LABOR WITH MORE OVERALL BENEFITS AS A RESULT OF THE COOLING TOO.

THAT'S WHAT I DID WITH MY 09 FLHTCU W-96" THAT WAS ALSO EXPERIENCING MULTIPLE ENGINE PERF & RIDER COMFORT ISSUES DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE HEAT IT PRODUCED IN SUMMER COND.

OPPS,SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS BUT AM NOT GOING TO RETYPE ALL THE ABOVE.

Moving on here.

Prior to addressing the excessive heat my hd's motor produced in summer heat it used to run 6-8psi @ idle & 32psi @ cruise which was ok and withing HD rec spec.

I have also seen other guys that installed oil cooler with cooling fans get similar improvements in oil pressure in summer heat on their air cooled HD's like i got on my hd.

But with me having 4.5 decades wrenching & building motors under my belt i realized just how the motor & oil were both suffering big time from being somewhat over heated oil/motor in summer cond leading to lower oil pressure more valve/lifter noise,leww pwr/trq,detnation,more heat hitting me etc along with a few other negative things engine perf wise and rider comfort wise too.

And that go's for when i tried a couple diff mfg's full syn 20w-50 bike too having same issue with std dino/semi blend i tried,didnt matter what grade/type/mfg's oil i tried getting same result in summer heat prior to cooling my hd's motor oil no matter what i did.

Then after i addressed the heat issue that reduced oil temp on my bike 50 deg f using same grade & mfg's oil in summer heat oil pressure at idle went from 6-8psi (no cooling) to now 18psi(with cooling) & at cruise in summer heat oil pressure went from 32psi (no cooling) to now 45-48psi (with cooling) all the time in summer heat.

The 50deg f reduction in oil temp that made a huge diff/improvement in oil pressure right off the bat when i installed an ultracool oil cooler with twin elec thermostatically controlled cooling fans along with Wards twin cooling fans both at the same time for a max cooling effort which has worked great the the 2nd season in a row.

And thats not including the other 4-5 great improvements in engine perf & rider comfort i got on my bike post cooling oil 50deg f in summer heat too which you have likely read in prior posts i have made here over the past few yrs on the subject trying to get guys posting issues with heat to see the light/fact which is:

Cooling their lrg disp air cooled HD v-twins MOTOR OIL 50DEG F in summer heat can & does in fact improve many things engine perf wise along with improving riding comfort in a few ways too right off the bat.

Greatly reduces or eliminates detonation,reduces valve/lifter noise,increases oil pressure 10-12psi,hot starts post fueling up are faster/easier,motor retains the pwr/trq & crisp throttle response it used to loose prior to cooling the motor,oil running 50deg f cooler in summer heat resulted in less heat hitting the rider/me!/LOL!!

How the avg HD rider with a lrg dist air cooled v-twin here in hdforums would not want to jump all over all those great easily obtained improvements every minute & mile they ride their bikes in warmer conditions is beyond me when all they have to do is install the same 2 cooling mods i did on my bike.

It took me approx 1 day to install the 2 cooling mods on my bike that i rec here when the avg guy here in hdforums will spend $800-1200 at the drop of a hat for for all sorts of upgrades that dont get you near as many improvements in engine perf & riding comfort all at the same time like the 2 cooling mods i rec do ?

BTW,i later enriched fuel curve a bit with xieds which improved engine perf in a couple ways ,but the slight fuel enrichment didnt seem to reduce oil temp a bit that could see on oil temp gauge & or in heat i felt from motor & or ex system too.
