Hey gang... just got my first Ultra. 2016 ltd. Pretty excited. Want to get the wife and I some headsets.. anyone here use the Law Abiding BIker ones? Or the straight up HD ones? Also I assume the Extended warranty is a good idea, havent pulled trigger on that yet. Any suggestions?
The extended "warranty" is NOT a warranty in the legal or practical sense. it is an Extended Service Plan- "ESP"
it is a service contract- the details of which will be in your individual contract- which usually cannot be reviewed in advance of purchasing the contract.
the terms will vary State by State and by issuing company.
ESP is not with the Dealer or H-DMC.
there may be requirements for you to have services or buy materials from specific places- the magnuson- moss act forbids this, but only applies to factory warranties
and there may be exclusions for common owner modifications- such as a tuner
( or even mods which already exist on your used bike)
ESP is great for riders who- leave their bikes stock...and ride 20K a year.
if you change something and trigger the exclusions clauses- it is money thrown away
if the bike is not used then you'll never know if something was going to wear out
Depends on how much flexibility you want. Just to communicate with the wife or also have the ability to communicate with anyone else who has a CB. Most reliable and cheapest route for the CB usage is the Harley headsets. If cost is no concern you could look into what one of our HOG members just installed. He has a Senna, which allows you to communicate with anyone who also has a Senna, all bluetooth. He just added some kind of Senna module that links to the Harley 6.5 infotainment that connects him to the CB on his bike. No cheap, but somehow is all bluetooth. I just rode with him a few days ago and his CB sound quality was great! Do a search if that interests you. Let me know if you can't find anything and I'll get the exact info from him and post it on here.
IF you feel the need (I don't) to buy an ESP then shop around....AND know that you can purchase an ESP ANYTIME DURING THE ORIGINAL WARANTEE PERIOD. You don't need to buy it at the same time you buy the cycle OR from the same dealer you're buying the cycle from. I got quotes from 4 dealers and all 4 were very different, with a range of over $700 between the lowest and highest for a 3 year ESP. In the end I decided, just like with my cars NOT to buy it. I'd rather keep the $1,200+ in the bank and accept the risk that nothing major will happen, especially since I only ride about 5,000 miles a year and always maintain the regular service schedule.
Like all other types of "insurance" it's all about how much financial "risk" you feel comfortable with. In my case I'd rather just pay the shop bill should anything major happen.......but that's me, you may feel different.
BTW...I have the HD behind the head headsets but have only used them once. She talks to me all the time, so when I ride I prefer to JUST hear the radio and the engine......LOL.

Welcome to the sight and congratulations on the new bike!
My wife hates the headsets so I have not used them in years. She just talks in my ear when she wants to speak. We almost always wear half helmets unless very cold or raining.
I purchased my bike used from a dealer and they automatically added in the ESP to my loan. The finance guy acted quite offended when I told him to take it out before we continued any further. His comment was that the bikes are technologically too advanced for the average person to perform their own maintenance. I won he lost, my bike hasn't been in their Service Dept yet. It has had some upgrades done by me though. Some use it, I didn't.
I had a terrible experience with my ESP on my last ride so my dealer suggested I go with an HD extended service plan when I purchased my 2014. With a closer read, you realize it is Factory Endorsed. Still, it was offered through HD Financial Services. While this may be splitting hairs, I consider it to be a part of the company.
The LawAbidingBiker headsets are good and half the price as HD. They do recommend that both rider and passenger use them so VOX is equal. They sound good and we used them with half helmets. The HD are good with most any helmet, but some helmets do not have any space to clamp on the mic, so be aware.
