Need help - Broken volume control replacement
So one day on the road, I went to lower my radio using the thumb control and I felt a dreaded click. I broke the volume switch inside the housing. I ordered the part, which has been superseded, and the wire colors do not match. The only markings on both switches are some numbers stamped on one side on each switch. Common sense would tell me to orient the numbers in the same direction and cut and splice the wires together.
The switch does not come with instructions, the service manual does not cover this and a google search yielded no results.
Need your help if you have gone through this or have some insight.

I just did mine.
first off what year bike and model?
2 ensure that you have the correct side switch- the left and right side switches are functionally the same, but use different wire coding and the index for the **** is 180º off.
it can be used but you have to translate the wire codes and the **** will be upside down.
for my 09 model the correct switch was the correct colours.
GY/GN
GN/BE
PK/WE
BN/BK
the service manual will not only show the colours used for wiring but also shows the switch functions ( what happens with contact from say pink/white t grey/green...vol - )

The original part # was 71619-98 that was replaced with 71810-08.
I checked wiring diagrams for a 2002 FLHTC, 2009 FLHX & 2013 FLHX and all are using the same wire colors for the audio switch. Are you sure they gave you the correct switch? It would be very odd to change the wire colors.
According to wiring diagrams both the old 71619-98 & the new 71810-08 use the same color wires.

this is my experience
from my fixin' it post:
the instructions to replace switch in the manual have the old wires cut near the switch and the new switch wires soldered on, shrink and route the wires so they'll fit in the housing- I do not solder on vehicles and have learned the hard way this don;t work well over time.
So...snipped the wires at the old switch. the wires with the new switch are plenty long- I stripped each back 1/2" and soldered pink to pink green to green etc, and pulled the new wires through the sheath .
once I had everything pulled through and put the controls back together ala manual, I cut each of the 8 wires to about 3". stripped and crimped 4 times, and taped up the bundle with a tie wrap to keep it all tight.

2009 Streetglide but I added the electraglide left switch housing to add PTT for my air ride.
The origignal is 71619-98. I ordered 71642-08 thinking that the switch was a little smaller as the old switch did not want to sit right when I put it all back together. Now, it did not break because of this. It broke because of me forcing on the new chrome buttons. Those of you that have put on the chrome switch caps can attest what a pita it is. The colors on the new switch are
Grey/Green
Pink/White
Purple/black
Green/blue
