My bike's charging system is acting up. One trip out it was not charging and then it began charging and now it's over charging.. 16 volts. Would this be the stator or the regulator..
I would put my money on the Voltage regulator being bung.
I tend to agree but the stator does need to be checked out.
Had a service manager tell me once that under voltage can be either the stator or VR but over voltage is always the VR.
Since you had both conditions I would check both components as well as all wiring connections and grounds.
The FSM (if you don't have one,get one) gives complete directions on how to test everything.
There was a voltage regulator recall for that model year. I had a 2012 with the same symptoms and had to have the regulator replaced twice. Before the last replacement it only acted up when the bike was hot, like when you're riding in town.
