Default newbie question - dual exhaust

Unhappy with the heat on my 07 roadking. Dropped by the dealer today and talked to the Parts guy. He felt much of the heat issue was due to the rear jug header pipe that has the 'Y' split (some going to left exhaust and some to the right exhaust).

Not looking to spend a lot of money (go figure after I purchased a harley) and like the stock exhaust note so not looking to make it lounder then it is. Cost for a set of Vance & Hines Dresser Duals (or I assume one that is made for my road king) would run $357 before tax if I purchase during Father's Day sale.

So a fewquestions -

1. Has anyone done this minor change and if so do you live somewhere where it hot?

2. If YES to above then would you say it helped much towards fixing the heat issue.

The Part's guy also felt it was the Road Kings that most people would complaining about though figure the Classic and Ultra Glide Classic pipes are configured the same way.

Thanks for any input and ride safe.

Heat seems to dissapate easier with duals. Florida Heat is hot with or without 'em howerver.

Best fix is to get a Powercommander and Tune.

The heat is related to the lean running condition of the bike coming from the factory. The cross over really doesn't have anything to do with it.

The rear cylinder is always going to run hotter. Reason is the engine is air cooled and the rear cylinder gets minimal circulation.

If you like the stock bikes get a SERT/PCIII and a tune.

If you like the performance and sound of your bike, just get theRJ Orginals Heat Defectors....do a search, most people that use them say they work great.

To go true duals it IMO a real waste of money, other then the elimination of the "Y" pipe which is a heat choke area. And they sound an look cool. But actually they are neither.

You can accomplish true duals if you really want to and save yourself a couple bucks without changing mufflers and all the plumming and both head pipes. Link below.

http://www.fullsac.com/index.html

I have the Hard Krome 3" T-Rex true duals. If I had not bought them at a bargan price of close to what the Fullsac option runs, I'd not have gone with them.

In the not so distant future I do plan on removing my true duals and going with a 2 in to 1 system not only for better overall performance, butfor upgrading to a closed loop wide band o2 sensor system DTT. Or even a single o2 system from RSR.

Additionally just going to the true duals you will still have a heat problem, just notas much.

Your best bet for now is RJ's Orignals Heat Shields (NoMore Fried Thighs)
http://www.rjsoriginals.bizland.com/index.html

At least you will have a better chance dealing with the heatwith the shields in place then you won't be soquick to run out and get a poor fix (true duals)for EPA mandated production requirementthat H-Dhas implemented causing all these heat problems.

When you really need toaddress yourlong term ECU settings, or lack of them from the factory!

To achieve any real reduction in heat, you will need to go with a full stage-one kit. That means slip on mufflers or a full exhaust system change, a more free flowing air cleaner (pretty cheap), and a fuel programmer such as a Power Commander. Your parts guy is correct that most of the heat you are feeling is coming from the Y-pipe area. The thing is, you won't get any real reduction in cylinder (combustion) temps by just changing the exhaust. In fact, you may exacerbate the lean-running condition.

This question has many answers all of which are true. true duals will make the bike cooler on the right side but hotter on the left (if you go true duals I don't recommend samsons they run in a fashion that with my31" inseam I scorched a hole in all my jeans on the left ). if you go tru duals you will have to add a fuel management system (pcIII, sert or one of the others) which will cool the whole thing down but you could have done this with out changing the headers my recommendation if you don't want to go 2-1 or are on a budget add a high flow Air cleaner of your choice (I believe there is a post on how to make your own on this site)and a set of slip ons of your choice once you figure what you want then get a PcIII from Jamie at fuelmotousa.com and he will send it set up for you.
