Default Grrrr. Thanks P.O.

Hey all....

Been thinking of switching the headlight and passing lamps on my '11 FLHTK to Sunpies. But come to find outf (after my investigation yesterday), the sealed-beam lamps the previous owner of my bike decided would be cool in the passing lamps have spade connectors rather than plugs - so the OEM plugs have been cut off the wiring harness inside the passing lamp buckets and replaced with spades.

So a couple questions:

1) Anyone with sunpie passing lamps - could I just plug the existing (female) spade connectors into the contacts on the sunpie lamp?

If not,

2) What is the correct plug for the passing lamp buckets so I can wire in replacements?

Thanks all, and Happy Easter to those who observe.

Dan

1) If they fit and you know which wire goes where then probably.
2) Whichever plug fits the new lights... Take the light to an auto parts store to test fit the connector and wire it up. Probably the safest way with the least chance of a wire shorting to the housing.

I'm not familiar with these 'Sunpies' of which you speak...but the original socket is available under part number 72161-06 if you'll trot on down to your local dealership. Usually, though, these sorts of things are solved fairly easily using common terminals available at your local auto parts store. If the cannon plug has been cut off, you can use normal connectors, it's just no longer a plug and play. Put some shrink tubing over the connection and Voila!

Again, I say, I am not familiar with 'Sunpies', and my information is general in nature, but I don't think it's gonna be a big deal for ya...

I reckon the PO did that as they replaced the bulbs with something readily available like Wagner sealed bulbs with the spades on back. Simple remedy

Just a quick followup post -

I finally got around to ordering the Sunpie lamps, and received them today. Headlamp was totally plug and play, though it appears the PO replaced the stock headlight 'bucket' with a mounting ring for some other light setup. Made my job dealing with the headlight easy (didn't have to modify the stock bucket as indicated in comments on the lights on Amazon)

Passing lamps came with both male and female plug ends (not advertised as such that I noticed) with the female side terminating in bare wires. Made the swapover easy for me - just clipped the spades off the wires in my passing lamp buckets and wired the female sides of the plugs into the now bare wires in the passing lamps.

Haven't had a chance to take them for a ride yet, but light throw pattern on my shed door says they're noticeably better than stock.

Let us know once you try them. I'm thinking about those.

Got in a few miles after dark tonight. Dare I say it? The difference is night and day!

I am very impressed with these lights! As dusk was approaching, I could start to make out the trailing edge of the light cone from the headlight, but couldn't find the leading edge. As it grew darker, I discovered I hadn't been looking far enough ahead. Throw is considerably farther than stock both forward and to the sides. I get better 'ditch' illumination from just the headlight than I used to with headlight and passing lamps (adjusted slightly walleyed to put more light to the side). There are a few shadow zones in the light pattern but they are not obtrusive.

The passing lamps are the real standouts though. They create a huge, wide bright field in close - very solid light, that fills in the vast majority of the shadow zones from the headlight. Bright enough that I can pretty comfortably see through my dark tint windshield. VERY good piece of equipment here.

I don't have any night riding experience with any other high intensity lighting systems, but these things are hands down better than the stock lighting on my previous Sportster and Deluxe or the stuff the PO left me on the Limited. Zero regrets on this purchase.
