I recently did a transmission rebuild on my 2010 ultra, I went in and replaced all the bearings and seals including shifter shaft just trying to be proactive while I was in the everything went well new gaskets and seals also new inner primary bolts I took my time did it right torqued everything to specs. Now every now and then I can get a whiff of gear lube I would presume burning on the exhaust and I have noticed twice now once after a 150 mile ride and today after a 75 mile ride a drip under the primary after it sits for a while a spot a little smaller than a dime. Not sure where it's coming from it's in line with the shifter but that's no guarantee where it's coming from. Need some advice go back in and look for it or keep an eye on it and don't worry about it.
I have heard of people putting dye in the trans. Is this possible? So I can determine if the drip is trans or primary fluid. If so what kind of dye do you use?
There is a UV leak detector you can get at auto parts stores. You need a UV light to detect but they are not too expensive. $30 or so should get you everything you need.
Thanks I'll check my local napa tomorrow I have a uv light at work I sell dye at work but that for refrigeration oils not sure if it's compatible with gear lube
So I can't let a drip go unchecked so I put it on the jack today and I found the inside of in inner primary was wet. So I went back in when I got the inner primary off I found it was wet all around the primary seal and the inside of the drive pulley I checked the fluid and some smelled like oil and some smelled like gear lube so I went ahead and did the inner primary seal and the trans main shaft seal. I hope that does it the weather sucks so I have to wait for a ride I did let it run for about 15 minutes no drips yet
that seal is what im looking at now as a suspect.......got some whirring noise and oil dripping from that area........thought it might be Inner Primary bearing from trans.......put some of that dye in the primary, ran it awhile and the drips shows the dye........drained primary oil, metal shavings on magnet......none on trans magnet.......How difficult is it to change that bearing and seal?
