Default Engine oil in Starter

2010 Ultra Classic, 120k miles.

To the point... I have an oil leak and a wrench at the dealer said there's oil leaking into the starter from the engine. Is the oil slipping past the O ring between the case and the starter? Or is there something more devious here? If that's all it is, seems like that's a backyard fix.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Primary oil maybe? Doubt engine oil. Yes, would suspect the seal for the starter to primary may have bit the dust.

If that dealer wrench really believes there's engine oil getting into the starter you need to run far from them. There's no direct connection between the engine oil and the starter.
Primary yes, engine no.

...unless, of course, the OP is following the MoCo"s foolish direction to use engine oil in the primary... [light bulb snaps on in several heads]

Can you see oil on top of the trans? The starter is sealed if the o ring was leaking you would have primary fluid on top of the trans

Or it would leak behind the inner primary the starter bolts to the inner primary either way if the tech was right he would have had to pull the starter to find it and if it was just the o ring he should have seen it. I you don't do your own work please find anouther mechanic

Thanks for the replies, boys. That was MY bad for wording it to sound like he said there was "engine" oil... I was typing too fast. I didn't ask how he came to the conclusion that there is (primary) oil in the starter. I just told him not to do the repair. Wanted to figure out if it's something I can take care of myself. I do a lot of my own work... it's just that the stuff I haven't done before, I try to get as much info as I can.
And yes, there's oil on top of the transmission.

Looks like a pretty straightforward job to replace that O ring.
