Default '01 Road King Headlight

Ok, so I take the bike to the gym this morning, get a great workout in, then back home. Once I get home I smell a very faint, plastic burning smell. I figured I got something on the pipes and take a quick look around, but didnt really see anything. So I kinda shrug it off and figure I'll take a better look later when I have some time. So I rush in the house to get my protein shake... Later this evening, I get some time, so I take the bike out for a ride, fill it up with gas and notice that my High Beam indicator is on.. funny, high beams are not on...So, I go around the front of the bike and blip the high beam/low beams back and forth and notice that when the low beam is on, No lights at all, and the high beam indicator is illuminated. Well, crap, I guess this cuts the ride short.. so I run back home with the High Beams on, so I don't get pulled for no lights on...

Once I get it home, I turn the low beams back on, no high beam indicator and the low beams work just fine.. *scratches head*.. Was I dreaming?!?! I put my nose to the headlight, low and behold there is a faint smell of plastic/electronics melting... Ok... tear apart the headlight and pull out all the wiring and found the issue... Apparently there's a bad connection on one of the terminals to the low beam light, and the actual plastic did start to melt a bit... So, I guess I'll be reaching out to the local HD to get the plastic plug housing, get some new connectors and throw it all back together with some di-electric grease just for good measure. I'm glad I came across this while I was just a mile away from home and not on my all day/over night adventures....

Has anyone else come across anything like this? First for me...

You can get a new pigtail at any auto parts store. Better yet, a high heat silicone pigtail from Amazon or several other on line sources. If you've upgraded a stock H4 bulb from 55/60, this is real common.

...and yes, it happened to me. Loose electrical connections can cause this.

Awesome, thanks for the info Veekness. Local HD shop does have the pigtail in stock for about 14.00. The local car parts place has one for 12.99 (not too much mark up). I'd rather pick one up today and not wait on Amazon shipping. I use this bike for commuting, so I could be back up and running this evening.

For the record, I do have the stock headlights and connector (for now, was actually looking into some day-makers, or something to the effect, however need to get this plug fixed first :/)

If you go with the Daymaker, heat shouldn't be an issue. Absolutely not a problem with the HD part! Keep the Harley all Harley!

Amazon Amazon
Then run a 80 / 100 Candle Power Bulb from Drag, and save a bunch of money while lighting up the road.

...or like I did, 90/130...then you definitely will need the silicone pigtail!
