Default reinserting passenger floorboard rubber inserts - problem

2008 Ultra Classic (bought used 2 years ago)

Passenger floorboards....used bike I bought has passenger floorboard covers. Issue is, they had to drill into the floorboard to insert screws to hold them on (see photo) -which is why I was never a fan of an add on like this.

Sure enough 1-2 screws fell out riding (drilled holes are stripped out).

While fixing this, I pulled the rubber floorboard insert out of the board but cannot get it back in. You have to push the 2 rubber nubs through the holes which is not as easy as it seems. I lubed them, tried pushing through no luck...tried looping dental floss around to pull through the hole- all that did is rip one of the ends off (the hemisphere rubber head is slightly bigger then the hole)

Is there some trick to getting these through the holes?

Thanks for any tips.

holes in passenger floorboards. the rubber 'nubs' need to go through these. The nubs are slightly larger then the holes

rubber 'nub' goes through hole in passenger floorboard

two nubs per rubber insert

these screws stripped

The original nubs have a long thin piece of rubber that you pull on to get the round part of the nub through the hole. When pulling, it stretches and thins out the round part. Those are usually cut off after install. Just gotta work it to reinstall.

I stripped the screws also when putting on the covers. I re-tapped and used 1/4-20 button heads. MOCO should have done that from the get go. Much better grip.

Using Dawn dishwashing liquid on the rubber "nubs" can help and I've also used small, flat blade screwdrivers to "assist" getting the "nubs" through the holes far enough to "pinch" them and pull hem through the holes using flat-nosed, needle-nose pliers.
Just don't pull on them too hard as they can break or pull apart.

The floorboard metal is kind of delicate so it's important to use short metal screws and just enough torque to "snug" the screws.

Spray silicone works well as a lubricant. ..just don't spray it I the same room or area as the bike or any other vehicle

Don't think you can pound them through? Meant to be pulled through (stretches them thinner).

I used pliers to pull them through. I pulled one nub through easily then couldn't get the second one in. Tried until I pulled one of the nubs off. Took the insert back and got new ones and had exactly the same problem.

Finally changed which nub I pulled through first and it then second went through easily.

If you have get one in but have problems with the second just change which one you pull through first.

I've done it. You need to be persistent yet careful. It's not something I will do again, without LONG consideration! Lubrication and a small old blunt screwdriver, to gently pry the **** through the holes.

could try wrapping some dental floss around the rubber and feed that through the hole and pull on the floss...
