Default FLHTK heated grips

So I just got a new 2017 Ultra Limited and I love it, but as on my last bike, I want to make a few small changes. One of the things I'd like to change is the grips but my dealer says that if I want to change them I will have to buy a set of heated grips and they would be wired externally. Now this seems really stupid to me... Why should I have to buy heated grips again, and why would they have to be wired externally? One would think that these two details would cause a lot of Limited owners to decide not to change their grips...

Is this truly the case, or is there a way to change my grips without having to buy something I already have?

I've heard this too. The accessory heated grips are meant for bikes that didn't have heated grips stock. So you have to modify the wiring somehow to make it work.

Or perhaps I just order the original CVO Limited grips since those come with heated grips as well?

There was a similar thread no too long ago, the recommendation was to use the CVO ones. I have the Limited and no real desire to switch out the grips. The heated grips sold thru the P&A catalog seem to generate a lot of complaints about premature failures, dont' hear much about problems with the factory supplied ones.

It's a short-sighted issue with how HD P&A grips are manufactured. The power lead is routed to the outside of the grip so that it can be routed down the handlebar (on the outside). The lead is molded in that way. You can drill the bars and route it internally, but it's a custom install at that point.

The stock FLHTK and CVO heated grips have the power lead routed down the middle of the grip to facilitate routing it down the middle of the bar for internal wiring.

The CVO grips are pretty pricey to buy for some reason, so I have chosen to just leave my stock grips on.

The reason you have to buy new grips is that the wiring is part of the grip, at least on the left side. As mentioned above the fancy grips are wired externally. Also as mentioned you can get the CVO internally wired grips, but they run about $600 if I remember right.

Yeah, not a lot of options. Be thankful you didn't get a Low model, we got cheated out of heated grips all together.

Yeah a Low wasn't even a consideration since I'm almost 6'4". But OMG. $600?!? Damn. I really hate the stock all rubber grips and want them to go. But wow. I just got the Limited last month. I'll wait for winter and see if I really even need heated grips here in the rough tundra that is Bay Area, CA weather. If I can live without the heat, then that will open up a lot of options.

I have come to like the stock grips. These are the first heated grips I have had and they work so well that I can live with them and love them as is!

I guess I'll just live with the stock grips for now. I personally think some of the "nicer" grips are more comfortable. I'm leaving on a long ride next week (going north first) and it's going to get cold so I'm sure the heated grips will be well used. This trip will determine if I can live with the stock comfort level or if I will shell out the 600 bones for the CVO grips.
