I am selling my 2008 Ultra and looking at a getting a Street Glide, 2015 - 17. The stipulation from my wife is that we can still do our annual 2 week road trip and she wants to be comfortable! My thoughts are to purchase an extra touring seat ( thick and comfy) and a detachable tour pak that I put on when we travel and leave in the garage the rest of the year. I have 2 friends that swear, with a different touring seat and the tour pak attached she will not be nearly as comfortable as she is on my Ultra and will complain to the point I will regret buying a Street Glide and not another Ultra. Anyone that has any opinions or experiences touring 2 up on a Street Glide, I would love to hear your thoughts on this !
You might want to look into just doing the Ultra with all quick-detach parts so you can put it into “Street Glide” form most of the time then go full tourer when the wife is with you. Probably cheaper than adding all that to a Street Glide after the fact
I absolutely agree that stripping down an Ultra would be cheaper. But do you think the "comfort" argument from my buddies is valid or just speculation on their parts?
You can get all the same seats for the ulra and the SG...and the same tour pak too....I bought a SGS and had a tour pak from my RK which was simply swapped to the SGS for those 2 week trips....your friends have no clue..but that's my opinion.....now comfort is all about the shocks you use....
I kinda figured it was a lot of assumptions and guessing but from your experience, are the shocks on the SG going to make that much of a noticable difference on a long trip. Swap them out ?
Had a 13 ultra traded for a 17 RGS. The girlfriend first ride on it she was like can we get the ultra back and it does have a back rest ..I will say the ultra was a much smoother ride ..the special does have low profile tires and a inch less sup..
The biggest change will be the rear suspension. You will lose an inch in height and travel. If a smooth ride is what she wants then stick with an Ultra. Or... change the shocks for your two week trip. Just an idea.
Well...looks like the writing may be on the wall for me.....or tell her to get her own bike! thanks for all your advise everyone.....looks like its likely an Ultra once again, and getting stripped down.
