hi everyone i have a 98 ultra classic flhtcui i have changed voltage regulators twice now in a week or less they go from full charging to 12.2 volts i have checked stator can't find any shorts voltage is were it should be .its not ground when i check it.a while back i hit a chunk of metel in the road .had to splice wires with shrink connectors but it runs fine just charging issues. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP
take your bike on a long ride and get everything good and hot, 50 to 75 miles. Then come back and test your stator again. Things behave much different when resistance goes up with heat.
Don't forget to test neg and pos leads from reg/rec to battery, do this hot at the same time.
Telling us that everything checks out without details is not giving us much to go on to help you.
How are you measuring voltages? Dash gauge or DVM. Where are you measuring voltages and at what rpm? What, ecactly, were those voltages? Have you followed the complete procedure for testing the stator? What readings, exactly, did you get? What is the battery condition and state of charge? Have you checked and cleaned all power and ground connections? Have you pulled the primary derby cover to smell the primary fluid yet?
More details will get you better responses.
Stupid question perhaps but my Road King is now having starting issues so caught an oversight I thought I would mention. I have just over 12 volts coming out of my battery which I think may be toast but the terminal bolts were not as tight as they should be.
Thanks everyone for your help .
here's what I have done and how I checked
Had battery checked it's good took all connection's negative and postive cleaned.using multi meter I checked at battery ,then I checked stator I get 25 at idle 45 at 2000 rpm checked for shorts 2 ways with multi meter according to jp cycle site and also with test light hooked to positive post no shorts.so I bought a regulator used orig. Harley.
I scaped the painted surface to make sure nothing stopping ground also cut wire from old regulator ran from regulator to negative connection so far so good
But I had checked ground on frame was good just took extra step to make sure.
Running that ground wire from voltage regulator to ground post off battery seems to of fixed the problem.found a problem with tail light socket was loose and was blowing bulbs so I cleaned contacts and bent the socket so the bulb fit tight. Anyway Thanks for your replies
