Default Six Speed

I was seeing if anyone has used an ultima six speed transmission on an Electra Glide with an 80 ci? I was thinking about trying to get another gear for highway speeds, but am worried that the 80 in will struggle as they weren't really known for a lot of power. The engine is fairly stock. The only modifications are a power commander, true duals at the moment (but switching it to a 2-1 system this winter), and going to install a v23 andrews cam in shortly.

Simply put, I would be getting a used tranny for 200 in a deal that looks to be in good shape. Maybe 5k on it. Was seeing if it helps anyone achieve better highway miles with the overdrive.

What smitten is saying is that yer stock Evo doesn't have the power to pull an overdrive. But if you are needing to replace your stock tranny anyway, hey, it's a good price. If you expect a gain over stock...with a stock engine. ..not so much. If the engine bogs in sixth it's just a simple matter of not using it.

There's no harm in buying a bargain! It will require a bit of effort to install, unless you pay someone to do that. I doubt if you will see any benefit in mpg with it, but then I get similar numbers from my 107" as I did from my stock 80". Your engine is currently hampered by the EPA regulations that applied at the time it was made, however if you upgrade with suitable components you will gain a decent improvement and be better able to run 6th gear.

You could also consider doing what I have, reducing the 32T trans pulley to 30T, to ease off the overall gearing a little. That will make 6th more practical. That is easily done while installing the 6-speed, although you will probably need a slightly shorter belt.

Second that, it's a good combination if you drop the pulley to 30T. I used an Ultima 6-speed gear set on a '97 FLHR and the 6th was really great for long stretches on cruise control. Not sure it made a noticeable difference in mpg.
