I posted an answer on a different thread. Here's another scenario, suppose the splines are stripped on the shifter shaft going into the transmission. An indy will sell you a shift pawl assy. and that will require to go into the trans. from the right side and top ($$$). I didn't scare you did I? I've been there, if it's just the little seal around the shaft then the price seems right. Good luck.

Also keep in mind, a lot of Indy shops have two sets of labor rates. One if they obtain the parts, second if you provide the parts. Reasoning is they make money when they obtain the parts for you. So your labor rate may be higher if you source them yourself.

Good point. Plus, many times they can buy parts cheaper then you can, even when you are getting a 10-20% discount. And they may pass some of the savings to you, or at least keep your TOTAL bill down.
