At around 105k my '96 RK's rod broke, and luckily I had some wire-ties on board to get me home. Having learned a lesson, I just purchased two heim joints for my new SG. You can buy a pair (chrome) on Ebay for $20, the price of the crummy stock HD part, or buy a custom rod with the heims included. Just screw them onto the end of your stock rod. My neighbor also gave me a custom SS rod for helping him install his PCIII, so I'm in business. I don't think the heim joints will fail as readily as the ball-and-socket arrangement, if ever.
You can also buy some rather nice custom rods on Ebay for <$60 that include the heim joints.
..justreplace with a HD Stainless Steel Shift Linkage (comes with heim joints and arm cover)and forget about it ..I would not waste my money buying parts to fix the stock POS.. one of the first things I replace on any new bike. I think they're about $80 retail...cheaper at Zonattis or Chicago HD.
Later
The dealer has fixed mine three times all under warranty and broke in a different place. I never thought that someone would make a better one than stock. To me that is one of the ugliest stock pieces on the bike.
