I know the op doesn't want to gut the cat or go header. But, Wouldn't gutting the cat be more beneficial than the x thing. And would truduals give him much more than a gutted cat. Or for a bit more- would a 2-1-2 be his best bang for the buck.
I'm I the same spot as the op but have the slipons and now I'm trying to figure out my next step. So I will be following this to see which way he goes.
The very basic things these bikes need is to breathe they have to choke them down and lean them out to meet EPA stardards. So that being said replacing mufflers and using a high flow air cleaner and removing the cat then add a simple canned map programmer will make the motor run much cooler and more responsive. That's all easy and not very expensive that is step one and all you really need if your not prepared to go that far don't do a thing and leave it stock. Jmho
i had a good experience with the FP3 fuelpak, when i bought my bike someone had put on vance and hines and a good air filter but didnt get it remapped or anything. I bought the FP3 and had it installed in literally two minutes, flashed my bike and all the backfiring went away...bike ran way better (lower idle, smoother) and not as hot. Yeah its alot of dough to make a bike run like it should
so, i can get a de-catted header off flea bay for under $100. i would have to go this route because im not that good of a welder and wouldn't attempt anything like that. the fp3 is $300 give or take. if i go the de-cat route i know i will need to get it tuned due to the less restrictive out flow of gasses from the motor, i understand all that. do i also need to change the stock air box and filter or can i leave that the way it is? ive heard video sound bytes on you tube which to me sound like the stock pipes are much louder? hard to say with my hearing but that is my perception. if my assumptions are correct here, these alterations would accomplish my goals for roughly an additional $100 or so, plus some wrench time on my part. the more i get into this the more confusing it is to me. im a fairly competent mechanic but im smart enough to know my limitations too. im not sure what an indy would charge me to swap the headers out if i get lazy and decide not to do the work myself. my big hands dont fit too well in tight places and am a little concerned about removing/installing the header piping to the motor.
I understand your thoughts but I would highly recommend getting rid of the cat. That can be done for next to nothing and a dynojet pcv will run you $299.00. Do those couple things and you will be a lot happier with your bike.
First off if you go with the fp3 there is no need for any additional tuning it does all that. Second you can go with an k&n filter and just open the plastic back plat up to let more air in . Third the exhaust if you have any mechanical ability at all you can do it it's just nuts and bolts remove mufflers and if you look under you will see the bracket that holds the crossover the remove the heat shields and right side floor board one more bolt behind the floor board the four nuts up at the motor. Put the new head pipe on and reverse the process
bike has whatever was on it when it left pennsylvania, so all i need is a higher flow filter? i like the looks of the stock air box cover. im gonna go the de-cat/tuner route. i can do all the work except for the tig welding, will find a shop nearby to weld mine back up or just get a header from flea bay, whichever is more wallet friendly, cant see getting charged more than $50-75 for 4 small welds. an indy shop quoted me $600 to swap the header out and power vision tune with no dyno run. they use a canned map he said.
Buy the head pipe on line sometimes they have an exchange price then k&n fp3 and whatever mufflers you want or put the stock ones back on for now the nice thing about the fp3 is ar you make changes in you bike you can reset the map. You can download the fp3 app before you get one to see how it works . You can do this and if you have s problem there are enough of us here to help. Trust me if you do this you're gonna like it
