One final question. My laptop does not have a 9 pin serial port - only USB. Anyone tried with one of the adapter cables you can purchase at circuit city or other places?
I encountered the same situation and purchased a serial to USB cable adapter. Purchased it at Fry's Electronics. I don't recall the specs of the unit. Some folks have had problems, perhapswith the data transfer rate of some, of the various serial/USBadapters.
Should have given you the CD and cables so you can update if you move out of the area. Your CD will only work with your bike since it picks up the VIN number. They probably used a canned product and kept your software.

The CD will work on any bike. The little black module that goes between the ECM and your laptop is where the VIN is stored and you can't talk to the ECM without it.
