Did you really pay $50??? How much did the original ESP cost? You paid that plus $50, and now uou are gambling. If you want certainty of cost buy the ESP. If you want to take a little risk that will likely pay off, ride naked.
I bought the 09 in 2016 and paid like 1700 for the ESP. Ive made three trips for warranty work and it has paid for itself at least 4x over. Im covered until August so I just need to decide
1. Am I keeping my King or is a new Ultra with an M8 something I gotta have.
2. Is the 96 enough juice for me? A 107 kit from FM would kill my warranty.
As I write this my cammed 96 has plenty of juice and is as comfortable as I need it to be.
I think as long as I take advice from this thread and stay away from riding a HO 103 or an M8 Ill remain content.
Have you tried looking at Discount ESP, 5 yrs for half the price and covers the same 1,100 parts as HD? Excepted everywhere with the bonus of taking your bike to any Indy for repairs, you can purchase the same 5 yrs for around $1300. Give Jim Palmer a call, lots of people here have gone this way.
Sold by one of the most trusted vendors on this forum and the biker community, Boardtracker HD.
I purchased a extended warranty on a Tacoma truck once. Traded in the truck and got the balance of the warranty money refunded. Have you checked into that option.
I would check on your 'pay the difference for an upgrade' idea. I doubt they will let you do that. They generally only replace/repair with OE style parts. I have never heard of them allowing you to pay the difference for a better part. They may allow it, but I would get it in writing before you buy on that premise.
That being said, I bought the warranty on mine so that it's covered for the life of my loan. Once out of loan payments, I can either upgrade or repair on my own. I just don't want to be paying for a bike that is sitting because I can't afford the fix.
Warranty is definitely worth the money. With what the MOCo charges for parts and labor it pays for itself with the first big issue. Ive had radios replaced, compensator and a few other issues repaired and all it ever cost me was $50. You can also get your money back from the remaining time on the warranty if you decide to move on from the bike at a prorated amount. Ive done it twice. So the piece of mind that goes with it for me is a definite bonus. There have been times that I wouldnt have been able to do the fix right away without it.

I bought the bike in 2016 with 15,000 miles and put 17,000 miles on it in a year and half. Only reason I only put 17k on it is because I had knee surgery and couldnt ride for a while. Trust me I rack up miles.
With the warranty (Call it what you want) if you break down anywhere for anything you are covered. Have you got a plan for if you don't have a warranty? Gonna call a buddy with a trailer from wherever/ whenever? Sure, it's a crapshoot. I do it for peace of mind.
I called Jim a while back about the Cornerstone Plan, 2 years was all they would go on a 2011. Five years on the HD plan was less than 2 of the 2 year Conerstone plans (4 years total in this instance), even if they stayed the same.
Everyone needs some plan of action in the event of SHTF.
I used to work with an older guy that after many years, He bought a motorcycle (Metric). I asked Him one day "What will you do if you have a flat tire?" He looked me square in the face and said "I don't have an effing clue - have not give it a thought".
Lots of those people out there - trying to make something happen while broke down on the side of the road. I will not be one of them. I have a plan.
