Default Cams or Big Bore?

I am looking for a little more hp and torque. I want to go to gear drive cams and thought about the S&S 510g. My mechanic mentioned going to a 95". He says the cams alone will help, but why waste money if you go to a 95 later. Need some opinions. Thanks!

I've heard the same thing. I did both and am very happy with the performance versus stock. If you are only doing 1, then do cams first. Big bore alone is reported to not be worth the expense. You may want to consider head work too. If you plan to do more upgrades later, maybe save up and do it all at once. Make sure the parts are designed to work together or you will not be satisfied.

MX,

There are many folks who will do the cams first, before they do the 95" kit. By doing just the cams, you'll pick up more torque as well as getting rid of the cam chains and those cheap, plastic, tensioners. Remember, though, that any part of the engine that is modified, not done by the dealership, may void any warranty and/or extended warranty.

As for me, I did both the cams and the 95" kit. Because my engine had over 40,000 miles on it. Now, looking back, I wish I would have done the 103" kit instead of the 95". As the cost was just a little more. Overall, I'm very happy with the upgrades. My RG now running about 98lbs of torque!

You can make lots of power with the RIGHT 95" but don't skimp on the build (especially the heads). My bike was making well over 100 HP/100 TQ with the Head Quarters 95" build. This 103" will pull a friggin house off of its slab.It all depends on what You want out of the bike and how much You're willing to spend. If You're gonna be a bear,be a grizzly!!

I new I could count on you folks. I like the idea if I decide to go bigger to just go ahead with the 103. I only have 15k on the bike so I may just go with the cams right now to get rid of the chains.

Could someone briefly give the steps involved in a cam swap and a big bore kit? As you can see in my sig, I have done few mods but want more grunt. I am trying to decide between a cam swap and a big bore kit. So I want to know what the steps are to see how much duplication there is. What is it with these new 96ci engines? I have been told here and experienced it myself that they are not very torquey. They seem to like to run at higher rpm's. For example, mine has plenty of power to run all day long if I keep it between 3200-4500. When I'm running the back roads and going up and down hills and around corners if I put it into a gear that allows it to drop below 3000, it's really a dog. Is that because it is essentially a stroker?

Thanks,

Dave.

Pawnbroker, if it aint broke why fix it?
You have a new bike with warrenty ( for what its worth ) why would you want to tea into it at this stage of the game?
But failing that, if you look up Harley Hog out of the UK. he does a pretty good explanation of how to do a 95 inch on his Road King.
I have toyed with the idea myself 02 Ultra, bu have convinced myself to do nothing till she breaks then decide what I want out of the bagger.

Just my .02 worth Cnd.

I first chose the 95" Stage II with bolt-in SE cams, MM EFI This provided gobs of power, flawless performance, and the chainwas reliable and inexpensive to maintain. Adding gear drive and headwork years later just makes sense now, but if I did it all over again, I would have had the headwork and gear cams first, and the 95" upgrade years later.
