My 2010 UC transmission shift shaft is leaking again. The bike has 52k and I'm the original owner. My maintenance records show it was replaced at 41k while it was at the dealer for a trans/engine interface gasket leak that was repaired under extended warranty. I noticed it leaking (the shift shaft seal)at 50k and verified it by cleaning it up and riding it the confirm it was trans oil (I run Belray which is red in the trans and Formula + in the primary which is not). Since the extended warranty had expired I took on the job myself and pulled the primary and replaced the shift shaft seal and all other associated seals/gaskets.
The job went smooth and everything was dry as a bone after the test ride and even after a 900 mile road trip to Death Valley and back. Now with just over 2k miles since replacement the leak is back, actually it's more of a seep since its not enough to cause a drip on the floor yet.
I did notice a very tiny scratch at about the 6 o'clock position in the bore where the seals presses in, maybe from a pick used to remove the seal previously, but it looked ok to me. The only thing I can think of is maybe there is a groove worn into the shaft and its leaking from the ID of the seal or maybe from the OD of the seal due to that scratch in the bore.
Wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what the fix was.
There is a brass bearing that supports the shift shaft, It probably needs replacing. Too much play and the seal won't.. Someone makes a special tool kit that will allow you to knock the old bushing out and drive in a new one without pulling the gear box..
Thanks for the feedback. I found a parts breakdown of the bushing Max Headflow referenced, and that could be a possibility. I did compare the amount of fore/aft and in/out movement of the shift shaft on my bike vs. my wife's 2014 SG and they both seem to have the same amount of play in them.
