Default My poor old 2006

Bought the RKC brand new in 2006. It’s been maintained properly and has served me well. It’s gone through a slight transformation over the years (hard bags, solo seats, numerous exhausts, 21” front wheel) and last season (and I use the term “season” loosely as I ride year round), I didn’t ride much. I began to notice electrical issues which are a fkn nightmare. Then... it completely **** the bed. I eventually found that the rear wiring harness was chafed/chewed in the rear fender. I called the dealer and inquired about a replacement which they quoted me at $65. No big deal... but my main issue was how would the harness “stick” up in the fender? Is there new conduit with the new harness? Can i buy the conduit? “Awe, no... you have to figure that out on your own” says the parts guy.

Screw it- if I can’t get what I really need, I’ll repair it. Which I did and it was fine. Until a couple rides later... boom... ate it again. Repaired it a second time but couldn’t figure out why it was chewing the harnesses.

In a completely idiotic moment, CHECK THE SHOCK PRESSURE STUPID! Zero. Flat. Nothing.

Ok, it’s a 12 year old bike with 23k miles... pump them up and keep on riding.

Chewed it again.

I felt like ghost riding it into the river by then.

I finally had enough and tore it apart. Yanked the shitty stock shocks and ordered Progressives (which will be here tomorrow). Went to the dealer and grabbed a new rear harness and conduit... well surprise surprise... the new harness came IN the conduit which simply sticks to the underside of the fender.

Lots of cleaning, oil/filter change, fender reinstallation and just waiting for my UPS delivery now.

Can.. not.. wait

When I replaced the rear fender on my 07 I re routed the wiring to run under the left side bag rail. Put it all in a nice loom. Can't even tell it's there. No chance of it getting chewed up in the fender ever again.

I'd put it in conduit.

These days, a new Harley is no guarantee you won't have trouble with it. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

Just an observation, you stated " last season (and I use the term “season” loosely as I ride year round), I didn’t ride much". 23k miles in 12 seasons is only about 1,900 miles per year. Wow, you must have not ridden much at all last year.

I had the same issue starting to happen but caught it. I put it in a conduit also.

Shitty parts guy, they all have access to a parts book and parts fiche on their computer and could clearly see the conduit listed in the tail lamp section.

That’s correct... for ~5 of those years, I had a Road King issued to me for work. Other than 1-2 friends, everyone has sold their bikes and the days of riding 150+ miles/day are long gone, especially with children (but I wouldn’t change that one bit)
