I would have the bottom end rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing and get the job done right. I just had my sons 06 done for around $1,400.00 and ended up with just a tad over .001 run out. Add something like a FM 98" kit for another $2,300.00 and provided you have a tuner of some sort you are off to the races. You will run circles around stock 103's

The problem with any stock replacement motor from Harley is you are paying top dollar for a stock motor, stock parts with their sloppy stock tolerances.

The S&S motor options are awesome but be prepared to pay the price. Your bike was designed for a motor putting out something like 65 HP and 75ft lbs of tq. Double that and you are going to break stuff.

Thanks for mentioning that about the other components when adding an S&S motor.... that dang thing is 132 HP and 131 ft/lbs...... Not sure the stock tranny, clutches, or drive belt is designed to handle that

There are many guys pulling perfectly good 88 inch bone stock motors out of their bikes, to install big inch S&S as well as Moco crate engine's. Maybe I've just been lucky but around these parts, finding a good running takeout engine isn't that rare. And most people only ask in the $1,500 range. In terms of the cheapest way to go, thats it. Theres a shop by me that had an 88 inch takeoff motor sitting on his shelf for years. I think he finally sold it for $1,500 and got paid something like $500 total to install it. Again, maybe I'm lucky but that sounded pretty normal for a used engine installed.
