I have recently purchased a 2012 Ultra Limited from Buddy Stubbs HD in Anthem AZ. I have been thinking about a Harley ESP, which I am told is in the $1900 - $2400 range depending on duration. I have 28K miles on the bike and it is in great shape, but was wondering what the general thinking was around purchasing an ESP, whether or not people thought it was a good investment or not.
It depends how much you ride and your mechanical abilities in my opinion. I prefer to leave that money in my bank account. Other opinions may vary, ut that is mine.
You cannot really think of it as a service plan. It's more of an insurance policy. As such HD is certainly making a profit on that policy. FWIW you can shop around. Even different HD dealers price them differently.
My bike came with the remainder of a 5 year esp. It paid for itself a couple times over. The PO had the crank spin which meant a complete rebuild. I used it a few times after I got the bike worth another couple thousand dollars.
If I were you I'd scour the forums looking for common failures on your bike, figure roughly what they would cost and compare that to whatever you can find for the esp.
Off hand I'd be concerned about the ABS system, I've seen some pretty steep prices for that particular repair.

Thanks!!
I also consider it insurance. I purchased a policy for a total of 7 years for $1200 or $1400. So far I have 80,000 miles on the bike with only a front wheel bearing failure which just occurred.

Call Boardtracker HD and get a quote from them. It will be considerably lower than your local HD dealer. Check out www.discountesp.com .
If ya don't wrench at all, it's a much better deal. If you do wrench, it becomes an insurance policy against those major defugalties that seem to happen all too often...like crank scissoring or ABS failure.

I'll tell you the MAIN reason I bought the warranty. That Boom System costs approx. $1900 and if it goes out, that's a pretty big expense out of pocket, plus labor. There isn't a repair done, it's a REPLACEMENT!
I bought the HD Plan for piece of mind.
The best time for you was negotiating it in with price on the bike deal. That advantage has sailed.
The HD Plan pricing cost per year will depend upon duration. The discountesp in longest duration is 2 years. I was able to get the HD Plan for 5 years for less than two of the two year discountesp plans, (4 years in this instance) even assuming their plan prices don't go up.
If all you want is one or two years coverage, discountesp is a better deal. 5 years, it's the HD Plan.
With esp's, you are betting it will break down, they are betting it will not. Only time will tell who wins, but for me, piece of mind in the event of SHTF is worth it.
Either way, you need a plan of action. Plan for the unexpected. I have NO intentions of being stranded somewhere calling buddies trying to come up with something in who knows where with who knows what.

so how come i can go to their website and sign up for 5 years on a 2012 with no factory warranty then?
