I've noticed on my 07 King (vivid Black) the clearcoat starting to look somewhat dull on both sides and lower part of the gas tank. I guess it's where the inner part of my legs sometimes rub up against it.
Has anyone had a problem with this before? Is this normal, and all i need is a good wax to bring out the color again? If so, what do u recommend?
There are no scratches on it (just dulla dull look)
My dealer has tried to look the other way everytime the subject is brought up...something about Harley's clearcoat was exceptionaly "soft" as of late. Mine is the same way. It can be buffed out and made to look like new, but will always return to what you've got now unless the tank is clearcoated again with a better process.
I can recommend a good quality polish followed up with a wax. The one that I used is made by 3M and sold at wal-mart. I dont think that the clear seems to be any softer than it was on my prior ride (honda VTX) and even seems to hold up to abuse a bit better than the clear I put over my custom paint on the VTX. It just shows up a lot more on Vivid Black. My solution is to wait till riding season is over and buff it out over the winter. Good Luck.

It will happen. One solution...Floor board extensions and keep those legs off of the tank
you know I love ya man! just keep ridding. 5000 miles is a drop in the bucket and things will not stay as they once were. Wait a few weeks and we will be down and will put a few miles on that bike and give you a chance to rub more paint off.

I had the same problem. I have had great success with the Harley Swirl and Scratch remover. It completely removes the abrasions and restores the finish. I then follow up with the S100 wax. Last time I washed my bike I hit the abrasion area with the Swirl and Scratch remover and then put two coats of wax on the tank. Haven't had a problem since. Good luck.
I have the same issue on my '07 Ultra. Actually am looking at 3m product. Where they put the 3m film on to protect and retain shine. the 3m Scotchgard Paint Protection Film is what I'm talking about:
thinking of having bike coated in it (Upper & Lower Fairings, Tank, Tour Pak, Saddle bags). I haven't yet gotten an estimate for it but figure it'll help for rock-chips as well.
anyone had the scotchgard PPF put on their bike?
My bud put on a Tank Bra...... I don't care for the look of those ... so I really don't wanna go that route.
