Default 2003 Road King Caliper Rebuild

Not sure if my post in the brake technical section was deleted or if I suck at searching, but it wasn't getting any views anyway. I need to rebuild at least my front calipers and may do all 3, back too since I'm doing it. I see "caliper rebuild kits" on eBay and such, but want to use OEM parts. I don't see anything from Harley, so do I have to order each individual part and gasket? I don't want to get this thing tore down and be missing something trivial.

I saw that and was looking at the seal kit. However, I'm not aware of what other parts are recommended to be replaced. It shows dual piston and thought mine had 4, so I need 2 kits per caliper? Planned to replace the bleeder as the previous mechanic stripped 1 and the other is close. Is spring kit needed? A lot of variables.

When I have rebuild these I purchase the Piston Kit 44313-01A, Pin kit 44314-00 and Spring Kit 44337-00B. If your pistons are in good shape and can be cleaned up really well you can save a big chunk by not purchasing the Pistons and just getting the Seal Kit 44315-00A.
You need two each of these Kits in order to rebuild both front calipers. Each Kit rebuilds one caliper.

You can re-use your caliper pistons if they are in good condition (no rust), and that will save you $$$

I chose to replace the tired front calipers on my 2001 Ultra project due to seized and rusted pistons. Purchased a set of interchangeable front calipers from eBay off a low mileage V-Rod. Pads had very little wear, so I re-used them too … paid under $50 shipped for the pair. That was less $$$ then a rebuild kit and pads for the old calipers of my 2001.

It wasn't deleted, you need to change the "Display Options" to something other than "Last Day" (and click "Show Threads") and do that (if applicable) every time you come to that section

Need to resurrect this thread as my sticking brakes issue is driving me crazy.

I replaced the seals in my '08 RK Brembo calipers with the Cycle Pro kit but the original pistons (in good shape so perfectly reusable) would not squeeze through the fluid seal at all. I took it to a local bike shop for a second opinion and they agreed. Said there was no way that was the correct size seal.

The parts store took the two kits back and said they'd follow-up with their supplier. In the mean time I'm off the road and the bike's my main transport.

Has anybody else struck this problem? Should I have ordered the Cycle Pro pistons too? Any advice you can give would be much appreciated. I've already rebuilt the master cylinder too by the way. Just in case the issue was there. There's no pressure being held in the lines. It's simply that the pistons don't retract sufficiently so I've brake drag. Just cost me $500 NZ for a set of rotors and I don't want to risk warping them.

Thanks in advance guys.

Brian on my 03 I found that the o-rings were fine, it was just caked up crud that kept three out of the four pistons from pushing out. Only one was actually pressing against the caliper.

How did your original o-rings and pistons look? Are they in good enough shape to put back in for the short term?

The first time my front brake got weak I took the caliper apart and took the pistons out and cleaned them. About 10,000 miles later the spongey brake lever came back again. This time I just removed the caliper and pumped the lever to get all four pistons to push out (I brace the ones that were working to force the others out) and cleaned them with brake cleaner and a toothbrush. When I put the caliper back on again it worked like new.

Good luck.

I can’t remember when the Brimbos came out, but previous Harley brakes need a cleaning about every 10,000 miles. Just spray them with brake cleaner. You can do a better job taking them off, but you don’t really need to if you are going on a ride.
