Having worked as a Parts Manager at the local Harley dealer I do remember seeing a sheet that showed the profit in the bikes and like most things the % on the cheaper bikes was less and as best I can remember the profit of a bagger was about $3500.00 - $4,000.00. Not as much profit in the bikes as you might think. The money is in the parts & accessories and clothes. Clothing is usually 2 X cost.
Bought the RG 2 weeks ago. i offered them MSRP with no setup or freight. The dealer lowered the price of the bike down and added the freight/dealer prep which got me back to MSRP. It was the best deal I could find in the Carolina's area.
Now is the best time to buy, 08's will be shipping this month and dealers don't want to be stuck with 07s. Bought my '06 just as the '07s arrived and saved a ton. OTD price on my '06 was $3335 less than buying the '06 at MSRP OTD.
Just looked in the Illinois Auto-RV trader, several dealers, including Lakes Shore HD have big sale prices on all remaining '07s from XLs to Ultra Classics and ~everything~ in between. Most every dealer in NE Illinois and SE Wisconsin has plenty of inventory left and all are dealing. Heck even if you lived 1000 miles away, you could buy a one-way plane ticket and ride it home and still save a ton of $$$.
Peppa1, I have never worked at a HD dealer, but I have worked at a screen print shop that made custom shirts for events. T shirts are bought in bulk at anywhere from $.19 - $.49 cents a shirt, depending on color, sizeand weight. Screen print front and back designs (as HD shirts are) put the total cost at less than $3 bucks a shirt. Obviously the greater quantity, the cheaper it is. The last time I checked, a new HD t-shirt goes for $27 bucks. If you say mark up is double, that would mean that HD gets their shirts at $13.50 each, meaning the maker of said shirt is getting a $10 dollar profit per shirt? I find that hard to believe. I'm not calling you a liar, just stating facts as I know it. IMO
Papa Travis,
Harley Davidson has a licensing agreement with 2 t-shirt companies, RK Stratman & Holubeck so dealers can't just go down the street to the local screen printing shops and have these things done up. The dealers can design their own back prints and submit them for approval but these 2 comapnies come around 2-3 times a year and are at the 2 dealer shows that your dealer goes to each year and they have several designs to pick from but dealers are limited to buying from only these 2 companies, thus the lack of being able to buy $3 shirts.
Bought an 06 in January for 3K off MSRP... actually a little more than that.
so you're saying that you paid less than 14,885? maybe i need to go to your area next time i'm looking for a bike, can't get deals like that around here (louisiana).
I got $1900 of my 07 Ultra at Chicago H-D, and it was the first 07 they delivered. Lake Shore H-D in Libertyville IL is giving $2000 off 07's now. $3k seems a bit much, but it is worth a shot.
