Default Dealer Invoice Still The Benchmark?

Question #1: The last couple cars I bought I was able to negotiate to Dealer Invoice. In fact, the last dealer gave it to me just a bit too quick and so it it made me wonder, is dealer invoice still the benchmark we should strive for on a new deal? Or is the dealer invoice the 'new' MSRP? I've never been able to buy a bike at dealer invoice but its always worth a try, right?

Question #2: If you don't think you'll have luck getting them to deal down from MSRP, what three things would you ask for to sweeten the deal?

1. Extended Warranty?
2. Parts?
3. Clothing?

What would be on your list??????

MSRP was it on my RK, so I got the dealer prep knocked down to $200 instead of $800 , got the Ventilator air cleaner & SC street tuner put in, mounting kit for the luggage rack or sissy bar, both manuals & 2 services and some tee's for my inlaws for that MSRP. I was happy with it. I'd look at the extra service plan but dealer pricing is crazy for it , you get the same through Discount ESP for about 1/2 what they want.

The dealer I got my RGS at won’t go below MSRP, but I was extremely happy with my trade and the finance rate on the first offer they gave me, they’re more of a volume dealer. They said they just give the best deal they can the first offer because they’re more worried about movin Metal than milking every deal.

That's pretty much where I was at the last deal. Did me real good on trade and finance rate was excellent.

Ive bought 2 Harleys at "invoice" and 1 bike 1000 above invoice. Those are based on the invoice prices listed on the seedealercost website.

1 was a 17 softail right after the 18 softails were released and they wanted to move them.

The other was an 18 Slim this past May. I threw a stupid offer at the dealer via email and they accepted it.

The 1000 above invoice was my 18 Ultra Limited in June of this year. I went back and forth and 1000 above was the lowest I could get to, which I was very happy about.

None of my deals included any freebies, clothing, cheap warranties, etc... and all were financed through HDFS(so the dealer got a kick back). When paying down near invoice I expect to get nothing added to the deal for free.

If nothing else it gives you an eye into their profit center to know where else you can get some freebies.

Mine was MSRP but 20% off parts and labor for 60 days and they gave me above book for my trade. They just move money around on paper. You have to assess all aspects into one number and see if you feel comfortable or not.

I bought my 17 RKS for $750 over invoice last September. I told them $500 over invoice but they wouldn't do it, $750 was the best I could find and I called several dealers with my offer.

If I had to pay MSRP I'd want a significant parts credit and/or extended warranty.

I paid MSRP for only 1 of my 4 HD's and that was the 15 RGS when they first came out. I bought it right after they hit the dealers so i knew I wouldn't be getting any discounts there but I did get (what I thought) was a good deal on my trade in.

Dealer invoices in the auto industry is a bit different than for HD. For the auto industry, there may be mfg to dealer incentives the normal public may not be aware of. There's always some financial incentives, as well to move the cars within a certain time. Then there's the customer rebates we all know about. An auto dealer can make $2000 - $4000 just from these incentives. And of course there's the financing aspect also.

In the auto industry the dealer invoice already has markup built in. What you want to ask for and see it the "Tissue"! That is the real cost to the dealer that has every incentive to the dealer along with the Dealers actual cost to the factory. So remember always ask for the "Tissue" when they pull out their "invoice"

The salesman said that with a straight face? They sell at MSRP and its their best deal because they want to move bikes? Seems like if they really wanted to move some they'd move off MSRP. At full list they're making mucho on every sale.
