Default What should I pay?

Looking to get into the Road King world with relatively low budget, $5.5k would be my top. My only real requirement is that it has ABS, which seems to leave me with mostly police bike options.

Some current options in the running:

1999 Road King Police - asking $3500. Its overall pretty ugly, chrome on the rockers corroded, 30k miles
2009 Road King - asking $6k. looks nice and seems to have a rider who cares about it and has lots of extras included, but high miles at 60k
2005 Road King Police - asking $5.5k. 45k miles, owner seems to be a bit of a jerk and doesn’t want to tell me much about it
2005 Road King Police - asking $6k. 27k miles. Bike looks nice but doesn’t have cruise control conversion which I’d have to add.
2007 Road King - asking $7.5k. 8k Miles, owners are nice and older, looks garage kept but not crazy about the color, it’s like a dark olive green

Not in a huge hurry as it will be a second bike, looking for a real good deal to come around but I’m not 100% sure what that’d end up being.

Based on the info provided, "if" I were to take on of them it would probably be the 09. If the owner can provide good maint. records and it has been taken care of, probably many more miles left on it even at 60k now. The 05's would need to have the cam chain tensioners addressed if they haven't been done already and that could explain why the "jerk" owner is being tight lipped. If it were me, I would keep looking if the bike just didn't something I would be happy with without spending more on tweaking it and adding stuff, especially on a limited budget. My 2cents.

Just a few comments. 60k is not a high mileage IMHO, there could be another 100k in that bike before it needs any major attention. I bought a pair of as-new Police bags in that dark green, which looks just great IMHO! Unfortunately that colour didn't fit my plans, so they are light blue now. The '09 sounds worth considering.

Murmurings from the crowd will follow, I'm sure, but I'd take advantage of the updates that were offered on the 2009 and later scooters ... To each his own but ABS wouldn't be a deal breaker for me ... Good Luck

Hang in there the used market has been flooded with the type of motorcycles your looking for right at your price range. I would just keep making offers on the one you like, all of them you listed are in your range and I wouldn’t pay more then you have its a buyers market.

I agree with Larry, or Uncle as he likes it. ABS is nice but with that top dollar you are very much limiting, rather eliminating a lot of potentially good buys. Many other things to consider when buying a used bike. If it were me with that budget I would keep my focus on a 2001 and newer. That is when the swing arm/rear axle was beefed up. JMO

ANY of those would be GREAT deals in my neck of the woods. Paid more than that for my 2004 RKC last year (it did have only 26k miles on it though.
PO was my BIL and bike looks just like new.

Like GB and others will probably say, take the '09 due to several upgrades right around that time frame.(no pun intended)

I didn't think I'd ever use cruise control.....and now I use it even on semi-slow roads to keep going (ahem) "around" the speed limit !
It's a MUST HAVE in my books for a big touring bike.

Why are you looking at a 1999 if you must have ABS? ABS was introduced on the 2005 Police bikes. However, the ABS unit takes up about half of the right-side saddle bag for that year. Your budget is at the low range for any Road King. Maybe invest some more and get exactly what you want. I have had my 04 RK for 11 years and have put 85,000 on it with no issues (I did put an S&S gear drive with 510 cams, to avoid the tensioner issues).

Of those the 09 would be my choice. If they're asking 6k they may take 55 if it's cash looking them in the eye.
To me the cruise would be way more important than ABS, especially Harley's ABS. Ive never had a bike with ABS and, while I understand the crutch it provides, I've never felt unsafe without it even in emergency situations. Cruise, on the other hand, on long rides is a huge help both for speed control and blood flow to numb hands.

Not to sidetrack the discussion, but that is one sharp bike you have!

For the choices the OP listed, I would think hard on the '09 also.
