First pic, its common for this to strip, there's an allen bolt on the backside, see if its tight.

Second pic is my 2012 Ultra, this is the inner shift lever behind the primary. The allen bolt should be tight. You can shine a light down there to peek at it & jiggle it. Issues arise when this isn't tight on the transmission shaft it mounts on.

Third pic, some folks have issues w/ these breaking, search the forum for Heim Joint and read up on the conversion.

Shift lever return spring. If you have to go inside don't overlook that.

Just had issue #1 and 3 on my 2011 FXDB. Replaced everything this weekend. Getting that shift lever on the spline is a pain in the rear with very little room to work.

Default Stripped rear shift lever

On my 2002 RK the rear shift lever is stripped my question is should I replace with the stock part or go with the “Better Lever” I’ve seen advertised. If I’m just going to have it loosen up all the time using the identical part that fails I’m thinking the over priced “Better Lever” would be the way to go
If anyone has had experience with either method to repair this issue please advise and thanks for reading

Baker also makes a lever, much better price too.

The prices on those "Better Levers" levers is crazy.

I think a lot of people buy these levers because they think removing the inner primary cover is too big of a job.

It`s just a screws, bolts, and gaskets, nothing complicated at all.

Make sure the splines on the shaft are not damaged.

As long as you keep the bolt in the lever tight, the oem lever is fine, just check it as part of your routine maintenance from now on.

How many miles are on the bike?

Shift levers on the transmission shaft are softer metal than the shaft itself so when the lever loosens its splines wear and the shaft spines are usually in good shape. Depending on year of bike the primary assembly might have to come off. Had to remove the primary assembly on my son's 2002 RK to replace the shift lever, but my 2011 FLHTCU has an indentation on the back of the inner primary cover that allows for the lever to be loosened, removed and replaced without removing the primary assembly. Not sure which year that change was made, but it sure makes for an easier repair.

The Baker looks like a good quality lever but the only way to use that one is removal of the cover I don’t think it would clear the casing to install
