charging system problems

Thanks RIPSAW, I have an auto-ranging Fluke meter so the right resistance scale is automatically selected. Manual states resistance between windings @ .01-.02 ohms. My battery is new and I threw a 12 hr. trickle charge on it to top it off prior to installation and testing. The internal winding insulation breakdown explains the voltage drop when the rec/reg is put back in line. There was no winding short to case/battery ground.

Check the lead from the bike to the voltage regulator. It's supposed to be encapsulated but on mine the positive pin had become loose and drove me nuts . Charging.....not charging. Replaced lead and funny enough local dealer had 3 of those leads in stock so obviously a common thing. Either way I replaced and problem has never resurfaced.. Something to think about.
