Did I ever love to hear that when, in my misspent youth, I wrote service. However----
Bike is a 2009 FLHT Police with the 103, 38K miles. Stock motor except for V&H Eliminator slipons, high flow air cleaner and tuned with V&H Fuelpak.
I get a tapping snapping noise, can't really tell from where. It varies with engine speed. I can't hear it when it's up on the lift, I only get it when the bike is in motion. It's louder under load like mild acceleration. If I pull in the clutch I do not hear it. It sounds like an exhaust leak to me. I see no leakage at the exhaust ports, crossover or slipon joints. I had the mufflers off to have a look, nothing. Everything is torqued correctly.
I had the compensator replaced so that clatter is out and now I can hear this other noise better. My mechanic, an indie guy has much HD experience and has always done well for me. He does not hear anything amiss, but the noise is recent and I hear it over the exhaust.
Any thoughts? Can't turn up the radio because there isn't one, and I can even hear it when not wearing my hearing aids.
Yes, I checked the pulley/belt it's all good. No I can't hear it at idle or revving when stationary. I even put it on the jack and ran it up in 2nd gear, rear spinning freely, no can hear. Under heavy accel, like over 3000 rpm, the exhaust roar overtakes this noise. I also get it when I ease out of the throttle like for slower traffic or a roadblock.
And BTSOM, it was an in service cop bike so yes, you're right. (Says the retired cop).
I'll bite, what causes that? I'm hearing that too on my 2013 but its more like 2200 to 2600.
