Default Upgrade: 96" cam or 103 kit

Let's assume that cost is not the issue here (but only between these two options, please please please don't say get the 107, 120r, 124 S&S).

I have the chance to perform one large upgrade to my 2008. Which would perform better?

The options are
  1. Andrews 48H cam (which is now called the TW48 through some vendors) (Bike already has intake/exhaust/tuner)
  2. HD 103 upgrade kit with the SE255 cam (this is the kit offered by HD on their parts site)
My riding style is pretty easy going. I tour a lot, hit the mountains, but I'm not rev happy (well...rarely). Mostly, I am looking for a low to mid power bump so that I can enjoy the mountains without having to rev the bike really high.

I am looking for any and all opinions about the options above.

Thanks
-B

Sorry, but, why pay an astronomical amount for a Harley 103” kit, when you can get a reliable 107” cheaper, from Fuel Moto? I know you said please, don’t, but, how much is the Harley 103” kit? A complete 107” kit cost $1,299. If that doesn’t convince you, then just do the cam, lifters, bearings and adjustable push rods.

First, Nice Bike!

Second I will tell you about mine. 2008 (same color ha ha), 103 kit, SE255 cams, K&N stage 1 intake, V&H slipons, SE Pro tuner. Mine rides great, I still get 40ish MPG, it tops out around 105mph but it will get there right now. Mine doesn't have compression releases, sometimes wish it did.

That didn't take long...

I have 4 years of warranty left on the bike. The HD kit will be covered under warranty. That's the reason for the 103. The 107 from FM is awesome, and I'd love it, but HD will give me a really big middle finger if something fails.

From HD, the cam and the 103 kit are the same cost (within $100) when installed by HD. I know I could save money by doing it myself or by having an Indie do it, BUT I lose my warranty for the engine (on either). I DO NOT want to mess with my warranty.

I had the 48H cam installed on my 2011 FXDB and was not let down by it. I would personally go this route and then when the warranty expires if you are looking for more, go with a FM kit. I suspect the cams will keep you happy for at least a couple years.

Instead of tossing a coin between the two options, just get both of 'em!

There is no replacement for displacement.... I'd get the 103.

Money doesn't allow. I get one or the other at this time. The kit comes with a cam, but isn't swappable without adding cost.

I have read about the 48H until I was blue in the face. People who have them, love them. I haven't heard of anyone who was disappointed. I also know, there is no replacement for displacement... Hence the dilemma.

Easy! Both! A 103 with a 255 Cam is not a bad choice. But if you do not have compression releases they might be a good idea to consider while the engine is apart. I did a similar build some years ago and went with Andrews 26H Cams and Cometic 0.030" Head Gaskets. The Andrews 26H Cams generate a slightly greater power band a bit up the RPM range ever so little (as in maybe 200 RPM) compared to the 255's. They also reduced the Cranking Compression just enough that I was able to get away without Compression Releases. So I was able to kill two birds with one stone as it were. A Win - Win choice IMHO.
