about to buy a used HD, which seems to have a 1450cc six speed engine.
I thought the six speed came with a 1584cc engine, please explain.
Was the six speed originally added to the existing 1450 before the launch of the new engine, or is this just a typo?
If this is a genuine six speed 1450, does that give any advantages over the new engine due to no restriction for emmisions etc? My existing 1450 Deluxe does seem to need an extra gear on the highway, maybe this is the answer in a 1450 six speed.
However if this was an 'inbetween' move from HD is it best avoided?
Finally if I go for a big bore upgrade to this engine, have I then got the best of both worlds??
It is a late 2006 registered street glide.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN, I AM TOTALLY CONFUSED!
I have a '06 SG and it's a 5 speed, 1450 cc. Tomy knowledge HD didn't start to sell the six speeds until 2007 with the 1584 motor.
To answer your second question. If the bike does come with the six speed (could be that someone added the new tranny) then yes it would help when you do a upgrade because it would help with RPM's along with fuel mileage and gear ratios.
PK, If the scooter is really a street glide, the tranny is probably aftermarket. However, if the scooter is a dyna (wide glide/super glide) it will have the six speed as factory stock. For the tourers (street glide included) the six speed didn't appear until the '07, along with the 1584 cc engine.

been to a dealers this morning and some of the very late registration street glides did have 6 speed. From what I can learn previous owner did not have this added on as it came as is. Clearly worried as dont want to buy a dog but from what you seem to be saying everything should be OK.
This bike does not have stage 1 tuning as yet, which is strange as the previous owner has spent other money on it, maybe that was true of the gearbox!
Anyone know of any problems with noise on this box with the 1450 engine, see a lot on this forum about people with glides complaining about the six speed on the 1580cc
6 speed is just another gear to shift thru unless you ride the major hiways all the time and they are to high geared to run sixth at 55 unless you like lugging your motor. JMO
6th gear on a 1450 would be about useless unless your going 75mph+. The 1450 doesn't have the TQ or HP to use a 6th gear especially if your loaded down. I would think it would hurt fuel economy and heat everything up.
Would it only effect the top end? I am concerned that if the ratios are also different lower down the gears maybe it would not run as well as the 1450 5 gear model I am used to.
Do you have any technical knowledge that could predict this?
Clearly I am going to test run it first but thought maybe you could save me some time.
