Hello all, just wanted to pop in and share my experience with head buffeting and wind management. I have a 2017 SGS, dumped the stock windshield and went with a KW 8.5" shield. It did a great job managing head buffeting up to about 50mph. Anything over 50, and my glasses/goggles and helmet felt like they are going to come right off my head. The shaking was so much that it was uncomfortable especially on the highway. So I added fairing deflectors, that helped a bit, but didn't solve my issue. I added fork fangs, again, they cut down on the wind, but are just plain fuggly on the bike, so I removed them. Back to the windshield, and specifically Freedom Shields. I wanted something different and wanted to solve the problem. I took the proper measurements with my set up and ordered a 10" touring shield in medium tint. Its wider and looks nothing like the KW. I took it for a test ride yesterday, and all I can say is it solved the issue. Even at +80mph (for testing only lol), I did not experience any of the prior issues. I could have went with a 12", but I didn't want to constantly deal with the top of the windshield right at nose level, so its at about chin height. Hope this helps others dealing with the same issue....and fyi I am 6'4" with a Mustang Super Tour seat. A few pics..... The KW shield Freedom Shield
I bought a 9 inch for my EG and it was still too small. (Air was hitting the top inch of my helmet, rather violently) John at Freedom Shields has been GREAT with me, working on all the details of getting a replacement. I bought a 10 inch this time and hope to see it soon. I cant say enough good things about Freedom shields.
I too had the KW shield, and it is an overpriced piece of plastic. Now I run the Freedom wide on my 14 FLHTK. The fit, form, and function of the Freedom shield has met all my expectations. In addition, I called John first and followed his recommendation for correct size.
There is no comparison between the quality of those two shields. Freedom is at least Twice as thick and there is nobody, truly nobody, better to deal with than John. I have used both shields and I have no complaints with KW, but Freedom is heads and shoulders above them.
Without doubt, the quality of the FS is great! Thicker, and more shield around the mounting screws. On a side note, on my ride yesterday, a bee flew into my face from the side, and got trapped in between my ear piece (on the 1/2 helmet). It started going crazy, stung the back of my ear, while I was swatting furiously with my left hand. That damn bee could have created a bad situation, glad I got to pull over and take care of the sumbitch quickly without any other issues.
