"Isolated Drive System Sprocket Kit Introduced on the '08 Touring models, the Isolated Drive System improves rider comfort and ride quality by dampening the mechanical noise and vibrationcaused by the engine's torque pulses. The rubber compensation elements in the sprocket act like a cushion, absorbing the power pulses from the engine. With the IDS installed, the motorcycle feels more refined, and is quieter while accelerating, shifting and cruising. Kit includes sprocket, compensator bowl, and installation hardware."
RE: The Cure for 5th and 6th clatter on tour bikes?
I hope they build alot of them cause they are going to sell like hotcakes to a lot of pissed '07 owners. I have the clatter that is ever-so-slight on load reduction between 68-72mph in 6th gear. I just wonder how much TQ this bolt on may rob the 96" from....if any.....it does mean more mass to turn theoretically.
RE: The Cure for 5th and 6th clatter on tour bikes?
if the clatter is transmission based, it is unlikely that a cush drive system (which is what this is) will fix it... and imho, if it does "fix" it it is only a bandaid fix at best... what the cush drive will do is, for instance, when you shift into gears it'll absorb a small amount of the shock that transmit from the wheel through the belt into the trans, thereby softening the "blow" of the gear shift... at highway cruising speeds though it'll do nothing to quiet it down... just my .02 worth...
RE: The Cure for 5th and 6th clatter on tour bikes?
This may just work since it further diverts the shock to cushioned final stop rather than ending in trans.Id be curious as to what HD is saying about this?
RE: The Cure for 5th and 6th clatter on tour bikes?
My 72 Suzuki Titan 500 had this. I remember reading that the real issue was the compensotor in the primary drive. I agree if anything it is a bandaid fix.
RE: The Cure for 5th and 6th clatter on tour bikes?
Incredible...I am fortunate in that my 07 Ultra does not suffer from the ailments of this supposed cure but I remember back in 1966/67 that my Honda 55 Sport and S90 (OHC no less)had these very same rubber cushions in their rear hubs. Come to think of it, it was a pain to get them replaced on a parts basis.Real original on HD's part. I will pass.

HD wasnt going to let the 07 clatter go into new yrs model.Time will tell what other changes were made but you can bet this noise is gone.
I may be premature in saying this but I agree. Too many people figured it out early in the game(including yourself) that the noise was emitted from a shock load being transmitted to the primary which then amplified the noise. Unbelievable how secretive Harley Davidson is with there concerns though............sheeeesh........certainly would have been better marketing to keep the customers informed if you ask me. I'd be willing to bet this "fix" was done along time ago, just kept away from the existing consumers till the '08 release.
I just wish I would have been the engineer that was smart enough to design this contraption and patent it. I'd be done with working.
RE: The Cure for 5th and 6th clatter on tour bikes?
Yeah I too wouldve treated this whole thing differently but it had them boggled for awhile. This new system was most likely only tested around March.Im sure the cost of repairing this was on their minds.Im just happier now that they took the info from some of these 07 owners bikes and put it to good use.If it works I have some crow to eat with the guy involved w/mine.I kinda feel for the owners that couldnt live with the clatter and bailed. Some of those guys took a good hit!
