I am a retired IT guy and I had the same problems others are describing here. The solution was to use an older memory stick, not the new, larger high-speed one. The HD USB interface is not compatible with the 3.0 and higher drives, at least on my 2019 FLHTK. I realize that your post is three years ago, but I just has this issue yesterday while updating to get my android to work on Android Auto.

Just replying to this old thread to maybe help someone. Ive updated my radios on several bikes multiple times. Just had one lock up while updating and it wouldnt do anything. Finally dug out a really old flash drive, put the update on it and put the bike in acc mode. 10 minutes later update completed.
