06 RK shift shaft pawl assy replace
can the shift shaft (pawl assembly) be replaced with trans in the bike? I'm about to replace the shift shaft lever second time since getting the cop bike, now has 60K mi. If shaft splines are worn, I want to replace shift shaft new. My manual isnt clear about sequence of disassembly.

Check the teeth closely. I dont think they honestly go bad. Im not sure about your year but my 09 shift lever is aluminum so theres no way it can wear the steel teeth on the trans. After trying three new levers I found a way to make them fit tighter and Ive never had a problem again. I took the lever and slipped a hacksaw through the slot on the side of the lever and cut into the opposite side of the lever about 1/8. Then I put it in a vise and closed it down more than stock. Just to the point that I had to tap it lightly to get it on the trans shaft. Then I replaced the cap screw with a grade 8 hex bolt and tightened it as tight as I could. Of course I had the primary off when I did this. I dont think the stock lever can be squeezed tight enough by the factory bolt alone.
