Default oil temp guage install

2 questions. I just bought an oil temp guage from stealer and being a newbie for doing own maintenence & repairs, some of the threads say to use the casting plug in the oil tank, is it the one next to the oil drain plug with only an allen wrench to remove? (horizonal). And I just installed a Jagg 10 row oil cooler and just wondering if I could use the fitting that came with the guage kit in the lines that connect the cooler to the oil filter. Would it give a cooler reading since it is in direct air flow. thank for your response.

Yes, the allen head plug next to the oil drain is the one you want. It takes a 3/8" male npt X 1/8" female npt adapter. I did mine after getting the bike good and warm and a long handled allen wrench did the trick on the plug.

As for using the oil cooler line, I have no idea.

I broke down and had the stealer install upon delivery of my bike. the put in the guage and the mounting bracket mentioned in the parts book. turns out that bracket has two plugs in it and a thermostat. one to an oil cooler and one return from. right now the oil temp guage is attached to the feed port. So in the near future i just have to plug in the oil cooler and t off for the temp guage.

Not to steal this thread, but I asked my dealer about the oil temp guage I've been reading about on the forums that replaces the "totally" useless air temp guage in the dash. He didn't have a clue of what I was talking about. Said he would order me the LED temp and level gauge that goes on the filler.

They called yesterday and said it was in. $135. But it ain't what I want. If any of ya'll have the guage in the dash please give my dumb a** some heads up on what I need to do it and where to get what I need. Thanks in advance.

I build hotrods from the frame up, even put a 1200 kit on my '03 883 Custom, but this "minor" stuff seems to kick my a**[:@]

Amazing, I used to workpart time at a Kaw dealership back in the early '80s. We were drag racing the 1100's back then. I worked the parts counter. I wouldn't say I knew every acc. or part, but at least 99% of 'em. If someone came in asking for something they saw somewhere and I didn't have a clue, you could bet that before they left or soon after I would know.

That guage is a good deal to have. no need to look down at the dipstick and hope you can see the readout before you go off the road. works fine for me. good luck.
