Default Winter/Storage insurance question

I have my 2015 Ultra Limited insured with State Farm and I asked them to temporarily remove/suspend/or whatever they call it.... ALL the coverage EXCEPT COMPRHENSIVE (for the Chicago winter when it's kept covered in my attached garage). However, State Farm tells me that since it's considered a "recreational vehicle" in Illinois, the insurance is sold on a full year basis, so they do not offer any way of reducing the coverage temporarily. My only alternative to save some $$ would be to basically cancel my policy and have them (or another company) write a new policy in the Spring.

Question: Any other Illinois riders care to chime in? (I say Illinois because it might be a state by state insurance regulation.

Yeah....don't know about Illinois...but here in Michigan I call my agent and tell them my bike goes into storage and they take the road stuff off and keep comprehensive for storage. It does reduce the cost and saves us money. Too bad your agent can't work with you. Maybe it's time to check other companies. I just did that and we ended up saving over $1200 annually for home, cars, and bike.

try Geico. I can put both my bikes into and out of winter storage with a phone call. don't even have to turn in the plates. I save money too by dropping everything except fire and theft during the winter.

Just curious, How much money would you think you would save?

The OP specifically stated that Illinois does not allow reducing covering to "storage" over the winter. What the two of you suggested is not allowed. Texas doesn't allow this nor does SC and GA.

OP, if you're that worried about it, you can change your coverage limits (eliminate collision coverage, etc., keep only the bare minimum - this is different than "storage" coverage), though most companies limit the number of changes you can make in a policy term (usually twice, which would be sufficient, i.e. once to lower the limits, then once to return them back to what you need). If you have a loan, most loans require a certain coverage/deductible. If you cancel your insurance policy on a vehicle, then get insurance on that vehicle again, some insurance companies will look at that the same way as lapsing - not good.

State Farm policy here also, and the same results.
It is paid by the year, and I was told the rate actually reflects the fact that you probably won't be riding it much during the winter months.

My 2015 Ultra Limited costs approx. $290 per year for full coverage ins. in Missouri.

Same deal here in PA with State Farm. It's a year long policy, reflected clearly in any correspondence I get. My rate is just a tick over $30 monthly. 33yr old married guy with nothing on my record.

If you still owe on it, the loan company will not be happy if you cancel the insurance. Ask me how I know

Thanks for the replies.
Actually the savings would have been worth it IF available. It would have been about $100 savings on a policy that costs $435/ year. My comprehensive coverage represents only $28/ year so the balance is about $100 per quarter and since it stays out of service for more than a quarter of the year. A possible 25% savings was worth a try. I believe it all boils down to the State of Illinois Insurance regulations for companies doing business in the state.
