thundermax computer help
ok if you tried to use it in xp without the driver installed first you need to delete it from the device manager restart your laptop and then reinstall the driver then hook it all up. xp will tell you everything is fine or just ignore it. sometimes it will give you a question mark saying it does not know what it is. but using without the correct driver it has to be deleted the driver reinstalled and then used. you can get to the device manager from the control panel hardware tab device manager.
My first guess (excluding not having the driver installed properly) would be that you may have another device that is mapped to a COM port that you may be pointing the software at instead of the USB/serial connection. If you have a latop with an IR (infrared) port, make sure that you aren't selecting the IR port as your COM port. Most IR ports map to a COM port. Also, if you are using a dial up modem, oryour laptophas an internal one, it's quite possible that your selecting that COM port in the TMAX software. Also, I'm not sure how sensitive the TMX software is to COM port settings, but you may also need to configure the COM port to the settings required for the device. Most modems expect the COM port to be set at 115200, 8, N, 1, None(bps/data bits/parity/stop bits/flow control) and the TMAX may or may not require the same settings. Your TMAX manual should cover what to set the COM port to. I'd try using COM1, COM2, COM3or COM4 in the TMAX software to see if any of them work. These 4 COM ports are the most common allocations on most PCs. You can check the "Device Manager" in Windows under the section called "Ports" to see how many COM ports your PC has allocated. To get to the device manager, if you aren't familiar with it, right click on "My Computer" on your desktop and select "Manage". Then left click on the item in the left window that says "Device Manager.
Hope that helps!

Not going to help you, but on my SERT, I used an adapter from Frys. Interesting thing is it would not work with my wife's laptop but did with my couple of year older business laptop. Could be USB versons or drivers. Have to wonder why SERT and Thundermax have not moved to USB. 9 pin serial is a thing of the past.
Jeff....you get it going yet? I could ride up Tuesday if need be, maybe we could figure it out. I couldbring my laptop up (Smartlink installed) to maybe get things moving.

Could there be something wrong with thetmat or something electrical on the TMAT or bike end?

Damn, I'm putting mine on next week, as soon as my pipes get here. Hope I don't go through the mess you have Jeff! Can't wait to see your post after it's up and running, VERY curious about the results.
A refrigerator in the garage is great resource material!

Not running yet. I found CDs for the radioshack usb-serial and for the BEst buy one and still no luck. Device manager on computer says that the devices are working fine. I tried every port (of the 12) in configure on the tuner. Usual message is tuner not found and an error message. If I manually go to the com port device manager says the USB-serial is at, I get a different message--something like communication timeout--check connections and make sure you have power to the device (meaning tmat i guess).
Went backwards and pulled ecm fuse and reinstalled it. Unhooked harley wiring harness from the tmat and rehooked it.
I'm at wit's end boys. It would be a lot of work, but I'm wondering if I should take my wife's desktop out to the garage. I'd be awful mad after that work if it also failed.
