Default Brake fluid flush

Do you have to specify to do brake fluid flush when you take bike for a service? Or is it included in one of the mileage services that dealers do ?

I have 38,000 miles on my 2016 SGS, have done regular service but never asked dealer to flush my brakes or service them yet. Planing on replacing front and back brake pads soon anyway.

Not included in mileage service because it is not mileage-based

Replacing brake fluid is time based... every two years.

It's pretty easy to do on your own. You can do it the old school pump, hold, bleed method or use the gun

Did you ever think about having the discussion with them instead of here?

While certainly a good suggestion...... I believe it's better, if you don't know the fine points of an issue, to get some info/be educated on it before discussing it with a dealer...

In my experience, there are too many dealers giving questionable advice, if not outright bad advice, about service practices/requirements... all in the name of boosting profits... all too often, the recommended service job list at a dealer has a few things NOT on the corresponding service job list suggested/required by the MoCo...

Don't forget, service writers are salesman.... many are less informed than some customers... And some only know what they are told by management...

For example, if he didn't know the MoCo suggests flushing the brake fluid every two years.... then he goes into the dealer and asks about it, and the dealer suggests that it be done every 5000 miles, he wouldn't know the dealer was full of crap...

From your post, I could not figure if you were doing it but if you are, suck it out with a vacuum pump. On a brand new master, one can pump it out. On an old one, it will severely damage it when piston goes deeper into crud past normal travel... Be sure to measure rotor thickness halfway down. There is actually very little excess on there to the wear limit stamped on there. And when you do pads, carefully after sliding out old bad, slide a slightly thinner shim in and push the piston out just a fraction further. Now shoeshine pistons with a cotton rag before pushing them back in.

Rebuild everything on the set of pads after this set.

If you have ABS then I'm with Screamin beagle , if you have standard brakes and if you have ever bled/flushed brakes before then do it yourself and save the $$, change brake pads before, then flush with the proper fresh fluid.
