I'm thinking about switching to the SYN3 oil in all three holes to simplfy maint on my EGC and curious if any of you guys have done the same, and how's it worked for you...?
Brushing all the anecdotal BS aside, Syn3 will work just fine in your EGC. It meets the specs H-D engineers set for an engine lubricant, and believe it or not those engineers know a lotmore about the lubrication needs of your engine that anyone in an internet forum.
Considering your engine was designed to give you 100k+ miles using any cheapo oil that meets the minimum specs set by H-D, and few people ever keep a bike anywhere near that long, most of the arguments around here about what oil is best are irrelevent.
A lot of people use Syn3 and I have yet to hear of a single case of excessive engine wear or failure attributable to this oil.
Could be thatthose engineers actually know what they're doing...
Service guy at the dealer here told me yesterday that Harley now recommends Syn3 only for the engine and recommendsFormula+ for the other two. He said that they changed their recommendation based on some kind of long term study.
Like Lost1 said, few people ever keep a bike long enough to make a difference, but I'm curious if anyone else has heard this.

Yes, that is what is in the '07 Touring service manual- motor oil in the engine and Formula+ in the tranny and primary.
However, lots of folks run 20W-50 motor oil in all three holes with no problems at all...

Hmm, this is the first I have heard that. The latest HD parts catalog that I just got in the mail still states that Syn3 is formulated for all 3 holes. The service manuals never say anything about Syn3 at all and only list dyno for fluids. For some time now they listed dyno for the engine and Formula+ for primary and tranny, never mentioning Syn3.
Did this new recommendation for '07s come out in a service bulletin or something?
I let the dealer do the first 1k service and they used also SYN3 in all 3 holes.
I'm keeping the the engine oil until I am ready to change it out, but I did replace the tranny with Redline Shockproof and put Redline MTL in the primary...I'm just picky though, you should be fine.
I was asking him for my 06, but the way he made it sound, it was across the board. I really don't know if it's valid or even really matters much, but he was very specific about it being a recommendation from Harley.
Seems to me though that if Harley was no longer recommending Syn3 for all three holes that they would change the label on the containers.
