He said that they changed their recommendation based on some kind of long term study.
in a service bulletin or something?
It was the long term study that using better oil made it so guys were not buying enough replacment parts or new bikes...
I used Syn 3 for 8000 miles in all three holes, much better than Dino, BUT I was more impressed with Mobil one gear oil in the tranny, no notchy shifting... As far as different oils in the clutch and motor, no real difference noted Syn 3, Mobil 1, Amsoil, iv'e tried all three, for the cost and ease, I'm going with Mobil 1.
I was burned once by believing the service manager at my dealer. Once bitten, twice shy. I have since gotten to know one of the techs there that really knows his stuff. He is the only one I trust now, and even then I try to verify things like you are talking about thru at least one other source. Their is way too much personal opinion and "well I heard from such and such that...." masquerading as fact these days to not do so.
Particularly when it comes to my scoot...I take my scootVERY seriously....
I was asking him for my 06, but the way he made it sound, it was across the board. I really don't know if it's valid or even really matters much, but he was very specific about it being a recommendation from Harley.
Seems to me though that if Harley was no longer recommending Syn3 for all three holes that they would change the label on the containers.
Both my 06 Ultra owners manual and shop manual specify Formula+ in the primary and trans. I have been using it in both holes with Mobil1 VTwin 20W50 in the motor. My next change I gonna start running Mobil1 75W90 gear oilin the trans but continue to use Formula+ in the primary.

You won't see Syn3 mentioned in any of the service or owners manuals for anything. That does not mean you should not use them.

Most likely. Who knows... This is the first oil change I've ever done on the bike, so I was just going with the recommendation from the dealer. Maybe Wags1 can confirm or dispel this rumor the next time he talks with his tech friend.
Had the dealer put the Syn 3 in at the 1000 mile mark and have had no problems at all. Bike runs great. As for heat, I have no actual temperature before and after measurements as I wasn't even thinking about that at the time, but I would say that it FEELS to me to be running somewhat cooler.

On page 83 and 84 of the owner's manual for my 2005 Fat Boy SE, it states use Screamin Eagle SYN3 Synthetic Motor Lubricant. When I do the 5,000 mile oil changes, I will probably use Mobile 1.
