I'm thinking about switching to the SYN3 oil in all three holes to simplfy maint on my EGC and curious if any of you guys have done the same, and how's it worked for you...?
Well, it'll be better for your bike than regular oil. I have an 86 and love the 20-50 in my primary and motor but I went to a 75-90 syn in my tranny.
Try the 20-50 and see how it feels (tranny).benefits of syn can not be disputed.
there is much debate as to which oil is best>>Amsoil (my choice), Mobil 1 for V-Twins,etc.. But HD Syn 3 doesn't rank compared to others. if your dealer mandates HD oil then he has to provide oil (not labor) free of chrge. There are those on this forum that can provide you with that law,act
I recently had mine switched to the syn3, and I know it definately made the clutch portion of the shifting feel more consistant when the primary was changed out. It was like the clutch assisted better with the synthetic.
Some will also tell you the engine runs cooler with the synthetic in it, don't know for sure of the validity to that, but I'm sure someone else will chime in.
I tried the syn3 in my fatboy, and developed a ticking noise in the motor. I switched back to 20-50 and the noise went away. For the tranny I run Belray 85-140 it shifts much smoother and is much more quiet, I wouldn't run anything else there, the difference is unbelievable. As far as the primary Istill run the syn3 in there and will probaly continue to do so. For the chain and clutche platesI'm okay with it there. Personally I think the syn3 is just to thin a oil for the motor. Of coursethe oil guru'swill beg to differ, that's just my opinion of it. Hey everybody has one right? I have heard good things about the Amsoil tho and notice HD is selling it now at most dealerships. I highly recommend the Belray in the tranny tho, you'll notice the differenceimmediately.
Have been running syn3 for over 53,000 miles now in my stage II and se 6spd... when i had it apart to do the upgrade at 29,000I found absolutely no wear on any parts.... am considering changing to mobil1V twinand their gearlube for the tranny to quiet it down a little... syn3 is a class III synthetic.... mobil and amsoil are a class IV, one grade better... they make oil...hd makes motorcycles, Citgo makes their oil last i checked... lowest bidder don't you know !!!! But I beleive in synthetic motor oils all the way !!!
Any oil is good, if you change it at the appropriate intervals. I ran Syn3 in all three holes on my 04 dyna, and put 20,000 miles on it when I traded it in on my 07 SG. No issues what so ever, I changed it in all three holes every 3,000 miles. Now I run Amsoil, change the engine oil every 5,000, trans and Primary every 10,000.
