The well nuts from HD suck, sorry to say, Klock Werks makes a version that is easier to use and is easier to re-use. I use them on the windshield for my Road Glide.
Are you installing new or re-using old? If re-using, first thing I do is screw in a screw and push out the back so the rubber is no longer compressed. They will not go back in the hole if compressed and bulbous. Hope that helps.

got them in after yakkin with technician. i put them all in place, then place the headlight "ring" and headlight in place. Put pressure on the ring amd tightened up my nuts. All is good
